5 Reasons Why Most Writers Don't Make Much Money

everybody I'm Jimmy from now off I should wave or not I'll just do that without the wave hi everybody I'm Jimmy from dysfunctional Lucy and I'm finishing up a blog post that I'm writing for free I know I won't make much money off my writing but uh that's okay because most writers don't make much money at all you know they've got a few of the best-selling authors maybe James Patterson or Stephen King they make a lot of money off their writing but most writers doubt and there are a bunch of reasons for that all right so I make my money from stuff that's not writing okay that's why I'm the perfect person to talk about this I could go and never sell a book well I already have sold books but I could go and never sell a book for the rest of my life and I'd be fine because I have a job that has nothing to do with writing so I write for fun and I write with the understanding I probably won't make much money for them from it here's my book it's on Amazon I always thought I sell only for a few bucks and you know I get a kick when there's a sales spike because that's kind of fun but I really make anything for a mix a price it really cheap a few years ago there's a famous rich author knows her name Elizabeth Gilbert who said that writing was flippin great oh she's another word for flippin and she got some criticism for it because people are saying well yeah of course you think it's flippin great you make a ton of money off of writing but most people don't make money so it's not so flippin great for them I thought you know what even though I'm not making any money off of writing I still agree with her that writing is just flippin great because that you know I get to express myself nowadays with the with the internet and blogs they can get an instant audience a lot of people don't appreciate that when I was coming out of college about 30 years ago if you wanted to get yeah if you want to get feedback from your writing and enjoyed a writers group now is always a crapshoot and I had some pretty bad moments in those writers groups in fact they even have a blog series called a writing group horror stories I've read about some of those and you know people don't believe me but man if I we're lucky that we're looking at a time when your writers don't have to enjoy screw peer feedback anyways back to us talking about there are some reasons why writers don't make a lot of money and reason number one is that they're too many writers have excess supply and demand with ebooks and blogs and websites you know millions of regular people who maybe thirty years ago wouldn't write aa writing oh not one of them now I gave up I originally gave up my dreams of being an author back in 1997 after I've been told several times that I had talent but my writing style would just go for a very great limited niche niche had a limited appeal there we go so publishers would be reluctant to sign me to a deal and then I put writing out of my mind for about 15 years and tell blogs came around and given you opportunity to at least write and even if I not making a lot of money at least give you the opportunity to build a small audience and get feedback I know the lot of writers out there but since I don't like I don't like blaming myself and I don't like blaming other people for low pay I present reason number two and that is they're not readers you know technology you know I have all these new writers but that actually leaves fewer readers because all those people who are writing used to be reading and if you spend a bunch of time writing when you used to be reading them it's going to leave less time for reading and I don't talk about some of those people during that time period one when I wasn't writing I did a lot of reading now that I'm writing again I don't read as much that used to which means there's some authors that maybe would have thought yeah you know I'm talking about so it just means there are a few readers to buy the books all these people are doing independent books and ebooks and stuff like that but it just means there are fewer readers and so if I write a book you know I'm not guaranteed of any sales except maybe my mom and someone else in my family a captive audience all right the other problem not problem but the other reason is a lot of writers published free stuff that's number three you know not only they're not only are there a bunch of writers new writers out there now a lot of them put stuff up for free and I won oh and I've got my blog that's free and a lot of people put free ebooks which I don't do if I'm going to make an e-book I want at least charge a little bit for it and if so much reading material is free that means people won't spend money on the expensive stuff so anyways spite their lack of income writers probably should start charging for the stuff that's already free if they do that readers would stop reading and I think most writers would rather have their stuff read for free than not read at all alright feedback is a payment in its own way so I figure any authors who get feedback especially good feedback from the writing I'll probably doing a pretty good job alright number four most writers come about most a lot of writers aren't good stuff promoters okay it's tough to me it's tough to pitch it's tough to pitch a book without treating people off you know if you want your friends to buy your books you've run the risk of then feeling used you know this guy only talking to me because he wants to buy his book or if you have a blog that only promotes your book that people stop going the blogs to get tired of seeing a picture book all the time I mean if you don't use your blog to pitch your book who else is going to do it so it's kind of a tough situation you know some writers to start good self-promoters I mean I can write pretty well but I'm kind of boring when I speak so when I talk about my book it might be all that appealing some of the writers can't have a brief some personality so they piss people off when they talk you know this is my most famous authors have publicists you know if an independent writer wants to sell books that writer that also has to be a good self-promotion maybe you have an outgoing personality but a lot of writers are introverts and then it's tough for an introvert to a self-promoter and number 5 this kind of goes back with goes back to reason number one but kind of a specific sub sub reason a lot of the arts of a writer's a lot of famous writers famous writers write too many books you know authors on that New York Times bestsellers list from ten years ago but it's almost exactly the same you know it's the same authors a lot of us write insane books for example you know James Patterson you know he's he writes way at least one book a month and it's probably not even writing yes our co-author and I don't know how much work the co-author does and if James Patterson just puts his name on it but you know that guy's putting out a book a month Tom Clancy is still publishing books and he died years ago I think even Ronelle Hubbard comes out with new stuff every once a while and I know that if famous authors stopped publishing so many books I know it would not affect me I know that my sales were not so many skyrocket just because he's famous author stopped writing so many books I'm just saying it doesn't help for the actual author who really does have a chance to get published you know I'm no I know I'm not that person I'm sure there's some talented author out there who can't get a book published because James Patterson's and other authors are pushing the same books every year so anyway you know what if if writers what a blame James Patterson for that's fine he's so rich the project doesn't care if your scapegoat somebody skin coat somebody who puts out thirteen or fourteen books here and have a masterclass and writes two page chapters you know you're gonna escape growth somebody skip code James Patterson nothing anybody should be upset with me for that I know that my prospects of making late for my writing or kind of dim but I'm not filled with you know I'm not a dude gloom type person you know twenty years ago I could just been banging those keyboards for with you know there was no hope of anybody reading my stories and you know now this I get read I get feedback and for a lot of writers that's enough you know and I think if you cannot if you can write and get feedback that's pretty flippin great or maybe I should say that it's really that's really great thanks for watchin if you made it this far check out my blog dysfunction illiteracy calm because it's all free I'm gonna get back and finish this uh blog post because I made some of mistakes wow this is what I get for making a video I'm trying to revise bad idea except I have to multitask because I have a job and a family
