Beat writers weigh in on Beltway Battle | MASN All Access

[Applause] [Applause] we're back in Charm City for Game two of the Battle of the beltway's Nationals and Orioles resumed their rivalry tonight for Game two of this series coverage beginning at 6:30 tonight first pitch coming just after 7 o'clock O's coverage on Masson Nats coverage on mass in too welcoming to mass and all-access I'm your host Paul magkano got another great show for you today we're gonna talk to both beat writers from a since ports comm mark Zuckerman on the national side and raqqa Baco on the Oriole side we're also gonna talk to Eddie maths of ESPN who happens to cover both of these teams but first let's rehash last night's game it was an 8 to 1 Nationals win over the O's conser Alberto provided the only offense of the night for the O's he had a solo homer and on the Nats side Rendon Soto Adams and Robles all had RBIs but it wasn't all Oriole starter Asher woojie housekeys fault he fell just two thirds of an inning short of a quality start meanwhile the bullpen allowed four runs in three and a third innings to the Nationals sent essentially salting the game away but while the O's experienced pitching troubles up in Baltimore their double-a affiliate down in Bowie was experiencing a pitching masterpiece Michael Baumann through just the third no-hitter in Bowie Baysox history it also happened to come against the Harrisburg Senators which are the double-a affiliate of the Washington Nationals it was an incredible night so let's relive some of the highlights of last night's no-hitter I think just rusting my stuff and you know just trying to understand that's the same game different level but same game and going out there and just trying to compete yeah my husband you know there's a lot of adrenaline pumpin once the ninth came around you know I've never I've actually never pitched in an IV in that situation once it was pretty exciting touches his mouth with his right hand now he's on top of the hill peering and he's one strike away the white and the pitch yeah he was putting together some tough at-bat today and you know I just said I told myself you know I just gotta attack them and not not trying to pitch around them everyone's rallying together and working hard and putting in the work and at the end of the day we're just living in the moment and you know enjoying we're out here just doing you can control and you know see where it takes you pretty amazing heard Michael Bauman say he had never even pitched into the ninth inning before and he gets a no-hitter and by the way that last out for the Harrisburg Senators that was Michael a Taylor of the Nationals organization thank you to the Bowie Baysox for providing that video and audio let's switch over to the national side because last night was good all around for the Washington Nationals they gained a game on the Atlanta Braves let's take a look at the standings after last night's game you see Atlanta still at the top there but now Washington six and a half back they notched their 50th win of the season there and the team below them the Philadelphia Phillies are two games back of the Nets they needed a miraculous 9th in and comeback to beat the Dodgers last night to avoid falling even deeper into the middle of those standings so the Nats currently on one of the hottest streaks in all of baseball as they continue their hot streak yesterday and hope to continue it again tonight against the Baltimore Orioles let's take a look at the pitching matchup for these two teams tonight it's Aaron Brooks going up against Erick Fetty now Fetty had a two-point one er eh by the end of May he was looking like an incredible fifth option for the Nats he bounced back and forth between Washington and Fresno since though and he's got a 5.4 9 e RA in his last four major league starts and tonight he makes his first start for the Nats since June 20th on the other side Aaron Brooks remember he started the year with the Oakland A's he was selected off waivers by the O's on July 6th and he threw a scoreless two and two thirds innings in his only start for the O's four days ago so which Brooks against Freddie tonight O's coverage on mass and Nats coverage on mass into and of course all of the coverage OHS and Nats can be found at mass in sports com written by rock cabaco and mark Zukerman we decided to get the two of them together much like we did with the on-field reporters in Alex Chapel and Sarah Pearlman this time we got mark and rock in the same room talking about OHS and Nats and the Battle of the Beltway we're sitting down now with the two head beat writers for mass in sports comm that would be Mark Zuckerberg and rock cabaco mark of course on the nat side rock on the OU side guys thanks so much for getting together in the same room it's time to get us together why did he get to go first so you guys have been covering your respective teams for a while mark you were with the Nets since their inception and before that you were actually covering the O's for a couple years back in 2001 2002 were the two seasons yes this guy had natural hair and mine was a lot darker were you over laughing at that point because you've been covering the team since 97 was your first full year so how have you guys seen this is a rivalry that obviously goes back to when the Nets came to DC how have you guys seen this rivalry the Battle of the beltway's evolved over time I think has gone through a few different stages I think in the beginning people thought hey this is cool you got teams from Baltimore Washington playing each other for the first time since the Senators and the Orioles yeah but the tinea team was good at that point and so I remember Frank Robinson managing at the time somebody who could speak to this because he had managed the Nationals and played for the Orioles said it can't be a rivalry if you don't have any mistakes really yeah and there weren't any for a while and then over time both teams got better and there were a few seasons there where there are some pretty meaningful games and you could tell that it didn't mean a little something to them I feel like Buck Showalter really puts an emphasis on on some of these games and the Orioles play the Nationals really well there for a period I think they don't over what the number was but they dominate him for a stretch for a while right the mass income and now yes the last few years I feel like it's maybe kind of tailed off a little bit maybe not quite the same I a lot of these players most of them there's been so much turnover on both rosters I don't think it means a lot to them I still think it means something to fans yeah of course but for it to ever really really catch on I think it's got to mean something to both teams in the standings yeah we've had a couple years where that was the case but more often than not I don't think that has been the case how about you rock we're getting good all right next topic there we go yeah that's true I mean I think it means a lot more to fans bragging rights then you see a lot of trash talking on social do you talk to players and especially it's such a turnover in a sort of Clubhouse they're like how I'm just happy to be here like I don't care who we're playing we're in the majors it's exciting that it doesn't mean anything to them oh and plus I think it's more parkway than Beltway so should be able to change it like we should have a power to change exactly yeah so I really think it means more of the fans I don't think the players are that caught up in it Brandon hi we were trying to bait him a little bit hey first battle the Beltway and he said it should be Park Lane I didn't say that he's just trying to piece together rotation if I swing the weapon that can get outs and all punches struck last thing he's thinking about it this is a neighborhood rivalry right it's not the AL East so I don't I just I don't think they look at it as huge rivalry and like Mark said when one team in this case is really struggling go through the rebuild then it certainly loses something there with O'Reilly it's a much bigger deal when both teams are really good playing for something there's some time how great would it be if they were in the world city yeah right yeah that was a distinct possibility there wasn't one time plus we're like that'd be great for trial Thea selfishly wanted that yep it may be a few years before we're talking about that again there was also a weird quirk with the schedule this year from the national standpoint they just played the Phillies now two of the Orioles and then they're going straight to Atlanta for four with the braids those are cute huge division series wrapped around this one so naturally I think from their standpoint this one's gonna feel a little less significant because they know what they just went through and what they're about to face it the most part that it's always wedge in the middle of the week too maybe it's cuz mainly two games but how often has there been a weekend it's you know it's a Tuesday Wednesday I would take the weekend for the better traffic yeah well my question for you guys is because we have the two games here and then in a month we have the two games down in DC I digress media dining let's talk about it now we have air conditioning in our prop no one is ghosted than the other I won't say to the actual feel so in terms of the fan bases because we've seen the Nationals fan base I think slowly kind of grow and obviously you know now that you know they've had this sustained stretch of excellence really that they've made the playoffs all these years in a row and had a winning record seven straight seasons you've seen their their fan base kind of go and the the way that they show after the park last night it was a pretty big Nationals contingent I think and then in a month's time we'll probably get some most fans and I think it's interesting every time you hear the national anthem down at Nationals Park you do hear the OU are very emphatic they make sure you make that for it yeah do you think we're gonna see more always fans down at Nats Parker do you think that this amount of Nats fans up at Oriole Park at Camden Yards I would guess more Oriole fans down there agree with the team struggling I there is still a large group of people who live closer to DC that grew up as Oriole fans and that's gonna be their team forever and that's fine you know it's it's hard to just off aside and say oh wait we have a team I guess we have to root for them now right no that's their King and given we're just talking about the traffic I feel like for a lot of people it's not necessarily they're making the trip all the way down they live in that area this is their better chance to see their team yeah closer to home and so they're gonna go to those games there's not a lot of Nationals fans that live closer to Baltimore than Washington yes oh I think I've said all along it's gonna take an entire generation of kids who grow up in the DC area who've always had the Nats before they really have established a full-fledged we're you know the majority of people in the area are Nats fans yeah eventually you won't have maybe as many Oriole fans that live in the DC area directly but I think it's gonna be a while too that happens and I think that's great they love to come see their team play down there it makes for a good environment you know I'm all for it yeah and I think a lot of times to fans like in this case Oriole fans first of all there's that thing where you want to take over somebody else's ballparks if fans cutting enjoy that plus it's a different ballpark yeah I think people enjoy making the trips a lot of Oriole fans at Tropicana Field they make a trip out of it yeah and in different cities so I think part of us too is hey let's go to play so we don't normally go to go for a game or two it's a different venue different concessions maybe you don't mind put up the traffic have anything else to do yeah so I think some of us at to that they they want to go someplace different this is a awesome ballpark if you're here all the time it's like let's try something else and then you have a chance go to somebody else's ballpark well you mentioned earlier the fact that there could be in theory just because NL and Al a mass in World Series at some point down the line which is how it would be called by oh exactly an ER would be on the baseball yeah exactly so obviously these two teams are in different state of competitiveness we know that the Nationals have a chance to make the playoffs this year and the Orioles are beginning this rebuild under Mike Elias do you guys think down the road just postulating that there could be a mass in world series that could happen I don't know in the next five to ten years I mean I guess it's more about the Orioles yeah but every year up ah yeah but they have to actually then once they get to October do something yeah there's that but at least they're in there rolling the dice in october's bunkies yeah you just want to roll the dice in October the Orioles are not gonna be rolling the dice I would think for a little while yeah the Nats are always gonna be a threat how long it this process takes we've been trying to get a timetable for people as you know no one will say exactly three years and five right it could be three or so it could be four it can be five years we don't know and that's what's requiring the patience that's where it's tough for a lot of fans who's to say who's just in this lineup they can't be serious I've never go to another game it's like this doesn't happen overnight yeah so you know and maybe it speeds up maybe some of the young guys especially young pitching if you can get some good young starters who are inching close to the majors and they can make an impact you can be a lot better yeah a lot quicker it all starts with the pitching so maybe that speeds things up a little bit a couple really good drafts getting more involved internationally that's gonna take time these are 16 year old kids going to the Dominican yeah it's gonna take a while but three to five years not out of the realm of possibility maybe by then the Nats will be in a full rebuild well so that's what that's gonna say there you go yeah we're assuming that the Nats continue to be contenders one of these days that's not going to be the case they've had a really nice run of eight consecutive winning seasons if they can pull it off this year I think they're still built no matter what happens this year they're still built for another couple years Max Scherzer is not gonna be here forever yeah Stephen Strasburg is not gonna be here forever Anthony Rando may not be here after this year yes they have Soto and Robles and they always try to feed that pipeline and have another generation coming up but they're gonna go through a down-cycle at standpoint that's the nature of things so I would think there's almost as much chance of the Nationals not being a championship contending team at some point when maybe the Orioles are again right I think it was it was actually a rare thing when those two teams in what twenty twelve and fourteen made the playoffs together yes same here that's a pretty rare thing and I don't know we maybe we won't see that yeah for a long time I don't know I I and I hope Nats fans appreciate what they've had here because they've been in the Orioles position I covered it it's not pleasant and it can take a while they pulled it off and look what they've had now for good eight years I know people are frustrated that hasn't resulted in the ultimate prize but appreciate what you have there aren't a lot of teams that can put together eight straight winning seasons like this and potentially make the playoffs five now were they eliminated on the same night the playoffs the one year I've seen a filling I think game five yes I feel like I was in the hotel room after the Orioles were eliminated I mean oh we did a Drew Storen such a way yeah I think it was writers thinking well the Lafitte oh well yeah good time for mass in there yeah but I'm glad you brought up the fact that the Nationals have been through this because they had back back number one overall picks yeah in Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg and now the Orioles have taken Adlai rushman number one overall and they could be on their way to a number another number one overall pick I just can't wait to see Juan Soto Adly Richmond facing off in the World Series in 2024 god help us if we're still covering this team you know knowing the two of us we probably will hopefully you can use the face app at that point find out what you would look like in 25 for it yeah and hopefully you guys get through tonight because it's a hot one no a/c in the press box but have fun with that mark Zuckerman and rock cabaco of course of mass and sports comm check out their coverage of the Battle of the beltway's we're sitting in the Orioles dugout right now with a man who covers both of these teams in the Battle of the beltway's that's Eddie Matz of ESPN Eddie thanks so much for joining me you cover both of these teams so you're up and fourth back on i-95 295 quite a lot a lot of miles on i-95 or 295 depending upon how ways tells me to go 70 yeah true there are a lot of different ways to go up 50 route 50 you know 150 to just name all the numbers and everything yeah exactly so you have been following both these teams obviously and as the trade deadline nears it's gonna be interesting to see where these teams go and what kind of pieces they could be moving on the Oriole side you were reporting yesterday that there were some Scouts here now sometimes that could be they're looking at pieces that they might be trading for other times it could be they're just getting their work done invent in advance of games but you noted that there could have been some of the former as opposed to the latter of the guys that were here yes yeah so I think yesterday I talked to some Scouts we had Phillies were here Padres were here Braves Diamondbacks but some of those teams are on the upcoming schedules and either the Orioles or Nationals so they could just be doing advanced scouting getting ready for the series or they could be looking at pieces for potential trade you know I think it kind of depends on the team I think a team like the Padres who the Orioles are I think facing soon that's prot I would guess that's an advance scout thing yeah Phillies are in bad need a bull help Orioles have a piece I wouldn't say a piece or two probably a piece I think michael givens is a guy that's drawing a lot of interest so if I were a gambling man I would probably surmise that they were probably had eyes on him he didn't pitch last night yeah they didn't actually see anything sure but I'll probably see I'm sure the same Scouts will be here tonight again exactly now on sticking with the Oriole side they already made their first big move in offloading Andrew Cashner to the Boston Red Sox you mentioned michael givens do you see any other potential pieces obviously Dylan Bundy was talked about for quite a while but then his trip to the il might complicate things are there any pieces that you think could be the next to go so I think of anyone's the next to go it's Givens I don't like Bundy like you said he's not whole right now he wasn't fit well he had gotten a little right before getting dinged up he was actually trending in the right direction so I think the hope was before his last start they were thinking if he throws a good one right here maybe we could leverage that but you know he got lit up and he's not healthy now so that's not looking good yeah you know you could argue a guy like Trey Mancini has some value and he there's actually that's not even a debate he has value the question is with the Orioles be willing to get rid of him right is he part of the rebuild is he somewhere in between no but I just I don't think I don't see him moving I'm not just not seeing that happen I also think his you know he can hit but he's kind of a tweener in the field so my sense is that the Orioles like a lot of players they probably value who may be a little more highly than than other teams do michael givens though I think to me would be the guy right he's the one bullpen piece especially because lately he's been pitching well his velocity has ticked up over the last couple months he's been pretty efficient and productive out of the bullpen so I think that's that's the next guy to move all right sounds good now on the Nats side the visiting team for the Beltway battle at least this week they are probably looking to add as we know because they are within striking distance of that NL East and they hold that wild-card spot so in terms of their additions they're probably looking at bullpen and maybe even fifth starter do you are there any names that kind of make sense to you out there for bullpen yes I think the starter thing we'll get that in a second I don't think they're looking for starter bullpen wise you know the big names I think the sexy name I can't see the Nationals being in play for those people like Kirby Yates Shane green Felipe Vasquez old friend certainly they will be helpful but I just think it's gonna take more assets than the Nationals have to give right they've made so many trades these last few years to depleted in terms of the farm yeah I just I even if you wanted those guys I don't know you have to give up like a car Turkey Bloom and I just don't think they're gonna be willing to part with him Plus that that's that hasn't really been mike rizzo style whether it's in the free agent market or the trade market they usually don't go for the Aroldis Chapman or the Andrew Miller they kind of go second-tier if not a little further down and with good reason like there's there's it's like in a new car versus a nice pre-owned car yeah right so I could see them going you know Will Smith is a guy who is the marquee name in that Giants bullpen I don't think they'll get him for that same reason but I could see them going for a Sam Dyson or even like a Mark Melanson or somebody was gonna bring him up yeah another old friend who's further down the depth chart that wouldn't require a top one or two prospect in your farm system and the starter thing everyone needs more starting pitching right but I I think one through four the Nationals are as good as they've been in any season over the last four or five years right number five is shaky but we're show me a team we're number five isn't shaky yeah right so sure could you go out and get a starter yes but then you're not gonna have anything to get a bullpen piece and that's the real need yeah and we could see potentially a fifth starter cement himself tonight in Eric Fetty a guy who has shown the ability certainly to go out there and dominate at times and a little bit of a struggling June but you know if he can stick and stay in this rotation then he I think could help this team down the stretch don't you yeah no doubt but you know you he's been up and down but that's like the textbook definition of a number five star exam I've seen good and bad from Austin both we've seen good and not so good from Eric Fetty if you have a guy who's consistently giving you good outings every time he goes to the mound that's not a number five starter yeah right so I think you know we saw it in the past in 2016 Joe Ross came up he was lights out and then he got unhealthy 2017 it was a little bit of Joe a little bit of Edwin Jackson but it was always like this and so I think it's you just have to kind of know that that's the nature of the beast and feel good about your one through four yeah and they have to feel very good about their one through four as of late especially we have seen too many major deals a few teams kind of dipping their toe in the market but it'll be interesting as you cover the next couple weeks right up until the trade deadline Eddie mats of espn.com thanks so much for joining us always a pleasure always check out his stuff on espn.com that just about does it for mass and all-access I'm your host Paul man Cano quick thanks to Eddie mats of ESPN Mark Zukerman rock cabaco Bobby Blanco Amy Jennings cam Hasbrouck and Brendan Mortensen don't forget to watch the game tonight Oh's coverage on Masson Nats coverage on mass into battle of the beltway's hope you enjoy
