Blues Dialogues: Music by Black Composers (full trailer)

for me the Blues is just like coming home the one style of music that I can listen to for hours on end with the Blues can take us to all kinds of places including right into the concert hall the repertoire spans almost a century it's wonderful to see what composers have done taking that as a building block of their classical compositions and in so many different ways there's such a variety of voices that are represented on this album it's just kind of like the music of where I live of Chicago and it makes me feel like a real Chicago and I started getting so many requests from students and parents and teachers for some music by black composers for their kids much of this music is unknown or it's out of print or it's in manuscript only the multi movement work for unaccompanied violin by Noel decosta that's on my record is a good example of some of the barriers that really still exist to this music being able to get played by artists when I got the piece it was in this fuzzy photocopy of a salafi manuscript and it literally wasn't playable I couldn't put it on the music stand and effectively play it from the page this is really music that is not only absolutely fantastic but also it's music that people need to know about you
