Bowie collaborator among artists at Toronto Jazz Festival

the Toronto Jazz Festival is in full swing showcasing some of the brightest musical talent from Toronto but also bringing in some bigwigs from the jazz community and that includes Donnie McCaslin who will be performing at the Rex later this week some of the hit songs off of off of his critically acclaimed album blow welcome Toronto for me I love the fact that the audience is really progressive here and I've been here over the years doing different projects all kind of on that tip and and I feel like that the audience is like super down and really into it and down to go on the musical journey with us I'm really excited to be here because I have Ryan Dahl who's originally from Saskatoon now in Vancouver but you know was the the person behind limb lifter and part of the Mounties is an amazing singer a poet with lyrics and so this is probably the most progressive thing I've done if we're going to put it into terms like that you know art rock progressive rock or whatever so I'm really excited to present this [Applause] well Donnie is loving being in Toronto he happens to be a die-hard Golden State Warriors fan but says the finals was the best of both worlds for the musician yeah I mean as I've told other people I've I'm a Raptors fan too and if they were playing anybody else I would have been rooting for the Raptors it was hard for me to see the Warriors have those injuries because I think in these situations you want both teams to be healthy and playing at the highest level so you see the highest level of basketball possible so I think for me as a long time we're fan it was it was that was disappointing to see KD go down and then clay to go down and cave on Looney you know it was it was tough Donnie was handpicked by the late great David Bowie to perform on what would be his final album Blackstar Donnie already had three Grammy nominations and an accomplished career before that moment but he says it's had a lasting impact on his life the impact artistically was something that is represented in blow where I had some time to process all that had happened and kind of sank in and I think it really artistically was was reflected in the vision of this record and personally you know I have had time to reflect on it he was just a truly remarkable person you know just a visionary artist Donnie's performance is one of the highly anticipated from the Jazz Festival this week it's actually happening right here at the Rex tomorrow at 10:00 p.m.
