Classical Musicians React: EXO 'Lucky One' vs 'Monster'

yunyi: x… o?… *semiramide overture plays* umu: so this is EXO. You guys are familiar with this group, right? umu: so 2016 EXO, this is called "Lucky One" yunyi: is this, am I gonna be the lucky one?
kevin: maybe this will be the lucky one shimon: you have to say it in Korean Ben: "three, two, one!" (in Korean) gwen: oh hel- heck yeah ben: alright naoki: cool beat Ben: shouldn't he be unconscious? fiona: okay, I'm feeling the uh – (sings) henry: yeah, I'm feeling the synth – davis: yeah ben: so is he having a seizure or is he dancing? naoki: a little bit of both, you know? henry: I dig this-
fiona: his eyes freak me out fiona: oh my god! they are hot! lindsey: this is like, real groovy nozomi: this is scary lindsey: their faces are so shiny! davis: yeah, really gwen: ah yes, put food dye in your IV gwen: that sounds like a good idea fiona: that songs makes it look fun gwen: what is this? it's not a hospital, it's like- gwen: really sleek murder facility fiona: their skin is so nice!
henry: listen to these harmonies – Oh! gwen: ooh, ooh, ooh his voice ben: they slowed down the harmonic rhythm, yeah you know? naoki: yeah, they did gwen: i'm super into the- it's like, like thick clavinova in the back? gwen: or probably some synth, but yeah, sounds like it, but i'm into it fiona: he's trapped shimon: oh, that was weird fiona: get it? I'm trapped naoki: it became more upbeat shimon: it came on an upbeat – wait, is that what you said? ben: because he dropped out all the instruments for a bit, and then came back with everything fiona: I feel like they could have done less on the drums yunyi: ah, I love this – it's so catchy! shimon: it came back on a weak beat, right?
ben: well, they are singing on the offbeats yunyi: oh! I like how it cut out for a little bit naoki: i like how they all are in the same place, all getting treated at the same time ben: true love <3 davis: i'm finding it interesting in the melody – naoki: oh! and now he's in unconscious davis: and in the background music – if you listen, it's like davis: it's like very intentionally place to cut in and out with the melody kevin: now this is getting better, i like this more – lindsey: mmm
davis: but it sounds really good davis: they are blending it together very nicely kevin: the black and white going through the planets lindsey: what is that? ice cubes?
davis: ice, i don't know. davis: you gotta roll the dice yunyi: yeah, that modulation, I was talking about
kevin: woah. yeah. yunyi: oh actually, it's not a modulation kevin: it's fuzzy yunyi: it sounded like went down like – yunyi: in thirds and then stayed there for a little bit yunyi: yeah, and they stayed there a little bit umu: descending fifths?
ben: Uhh, you know
naoki: it was like shimon: D2 minus 4 plus naoki: minus five plus four naoki: i mean you weren't honestly-
ben: ohhh! ben: ben we didn't do sequences in a long time naoki: you're too good, you don't need to know that already fiona: is she going to disappear? nozomi: no naoki: what's going on, she dead? yunyi: the colors are so beautiful, just saying ben: oh she's dead
Naoki: oh, he killed her naoki: cus' he's flaming , hot yunyi: oh woah
kevin: that happened gwen: again, I told you. it's a sleek murder facility ben: this does not look good gwen: and instead of escaping, they are rappin' mark: I feel like that rhythm doesn't come up in english. I think the language lends itself to that nozomi: which part
mark: that part – (sings rhythm) Fiona: I feel like this song would be it would be more like funky listen to this cool but with the music video you're like oh this is dystopian Lindsey: I think that the fact that they're wearing all white looks real cool with the lights and I think that was an intentional aesthetic decision but that doesn't change that it's cool Mark: Oh I like- I like the guy dancing there both: *laughing*
Kevin: That was amazing
Yunyi: That was great Kevin: freaking 80's flashback just like the music Gwen: Why is he.. dancing
Jeremy: I actually enjoy like the Like the backtrack but I don't like how autotuned their voices are (Don't watch Lotto then) Ben: The thing that's too bad is that they kinda keep a lot of the same sound the whole time on this one Umu: meaning-
Ben: I feel it's a little bit more-
Naoki: and there's nothing happening right now Ben: Yeah and it feels a little bit more generic from like I'm sure they could pump this out really quickly to fill in an album Mark: That's a fun song for sure the beat and the kinda reminds me of Stevie Wonder or something Nozomi: I just like that little part the fifths Kevin: The percussion dropped out for one beat that's when it sounde- Yunyi: Noo no nonono that's not what I'm talking about They either skipped a beat or an 8 beat it sounded like. Or maybe my mind skipped a beat Umu: It just dropped out Yunyi: Oh ok it just did a weird subdivision
Kevin: Yeah Umu: Do you remember MAMA and how they had powers and were able to appear and disappear
(I miss ot12) or have ice or fire or something Umu: I've never looked up a theory about this. I probably should've looked up a theory
Lindsey: Yeah you probably should've
Davis: Is this the prequel (No it's a sequel) Is this what gave them their powers before they went and davis: it's an origin story (no it's a sequel) Henry: This is the only song, like I said, only song that I would listen to the harmonies are really cool plus also the video concept was really dope Fiona: Yeah, the video was cool it just seemed way more complex Than before
Henry: I feel like, it was really part of an actual story that I just wasn't clued in on Also all the camera movement was really cool cuz it would like twist in and then twist out which is really cool Kevin: again see when I said that I'd like to be in EXO Yeah this is why It's continuous to prove it Yunyi: You would like to be in EXO? umu: someone- someone asked
kevin: remember that one Q&A kevin: oh yeah, it wasn't before our-
umu: on my app umu: on the bts amino app, someone asked like what group kevin would want to be- yunyi: oh exo plus kevin 😛
umu: part of kevin: yess Davis: It was another kpop banger this is just- it's great it's really hype I wouldn't call it like the next greatest kpop song of all time but I would call it something exciting and worth listening to more than once Umu: Ok I have a question So how can you- I know- i can tell when it's autotune when it's like lasfhafhahf ya know really obviously autotujned (Like Lotto) but i could never tell that this was autotuned Jeremy: This was like heavily autotuned
(I'm trying to be nice) Umu: What? (Same) Gwen: It's not in every note first of all and what you hear usually with autotune what gives autotune such a bad name is that people use it to actually change pitches in post production so if they wanna add a riff they'll just be like screw it, I'll add a riff and it sounds obviously very fake, because it is the way we could tell this was autotuned was because you know the voice isn't consistent when you're singing a note you know even with us you can't perfectly do that and that's just not how it works for the fact that it was laser and with every musical style where a lot of it is electronic I can guarantee that there's autotune it it
(Ok feeling better, just watch EXO live is the answer) Jeremy: I can also hear it I can hear the autotune, like a l- it wasn't bad, they did a good job with it like I could just hear that there was autotune Gwen: We're just you know pretentious I mean if I was a pop singer I would definitely autotune myself jeremy: yeah. I mean, I think all of them do it's that style umu: well have you heard of other EXO music by watching the channel? nozomi: yeah, well also I knew those before I met you
umu: call me baby….growl… umu: mm hm ok nozomi: I do like growl too, but maybe right now I just feel more this type of music mark: I feel like the last two songs ended with everything just dropping out and singing the final words mark: like lucky one or something else
umu: oh yehayeahyeahyeha umu: the other one was automatic mark: yeahyeahyeah umu: do you like that way of ending music or mark: yeah i mean- I don't prefer it to everything else, I just try to notice patterns throughout nozomi: as long as there's nothing half cadence since it's like left without being resolved
mark: oh actually that bothers you more than me mark: i'm ok with a half cadence mark: too many resolutions these days shimon: i feel like- you know how you were saying how it just kept repeating the same thing over and over again? I feel like if the video wasn't there and we were just listening to the audio, there would be times where we would be bored ben: yeah, for sure umu: ok ben: the thing about kpop is that their music videos are amazing their production value is…insane and they do so well cuz they really just had an A section and B section which is cool? ben: but how many times did we hear A-B-A-B shimon: it was in ternary form (omg umu shhhhhhh) naoki: no that's binary shimon: well the A section came back naoki: well B section also came back so that would make it binary naoki: RIP umu: ok so are you ready for monster? umu: this is completely different-
yunyi: monster?! kevin: I AM THE MONSTER fiona: 3 ah 2 ah one ah bAM *shook* henry: woah kevin: lights mark: woah naoki: so many pauses it's like mark: this is like- the music is like scandalous compared to everything else ben: well it's like super experimental you know? jeremy: this is very different- ohmygod a snake whaaat davis: yeah they're-
lindsey: wOAH this is cool kevin: is it going to do another transition-HUHhhyg
ynyi: yeah they're not quite- naoki: this is dark as shit ben: oh dude the bass kinda sounds like ummmm the Katy Perry bass from uhhh gwen: who's the monster? is there a monster or are they the monster? ben: bla- dark horse umu: or is society the monster :B yunyi: OHHH THAT W AS SO GOOD
kevin: i'm freaking out about the editing henry: boi it's about to drop kevin: woahhh fiona: aaaHHHH
henry: those- that's pretty cool~ kevin: oHYES MOSAICS naoki: oh is this the last supper? ben: ohhh duuude that is interesting yeah ben: i feel like last supper would have been all— both: woooaahh
lindsey: this is awesome henry: ok. this happens all the time in kpop music in minor when they do…when they've got i V V i, they'll have minor i moving to V, and then V….major I i don't understand why they do that so often nozomi: this is all in 4 and is so different kevin: like it doesn't sound corny! yunyi: also autotune-
kevin: even though it could yunyi: autotune done so well!
kevin: exactly henry: o dabbing :B it lit gwen: the dancing? stellar jeremy: mm hm nozomi: oohohoh *lol* davis: yo they're going hard AF davis: it's awesome jeremy: and even though this is kinda electronic I still- I like it ben: yeah this is pretty edgy…I like this, this is really good naoki: now something build bUILD I'M TELLING YOU TO BUILD ben: oh in 3rds yup davis: this is definitely a last supper of sorts
lindsey: i said itt shimon: ahhhh
naoki: aYYYYYYYY that was nice that was nice ben: dude their dancing is on point
naoki: ikr shimon: it's interesting camera work too ben: yeah ben: man also very social justice-y…fighting the cops? ooh fiona: they're treated like monsters!
henry woooaahhhh henry: wait a secooond gwen: are the revolting against an oppressive government jeremy: that's what it looks like
gwen: that's what it looks like yunyi: nope we're still in the same key we're still in the same key kevin: it's just a chord…yeah oh those strings tho yunyi: they just started off on-
kevin: can I just listen to this song all the time now? ben: his vocals are really good too
naoki: oh yeah naoki: yeah I like how these guys their voices aren't too high at least some of them
shimon: yeah yeah yeah so it's not like quite as pop-y as others makes it more grounded fiona: this orchestration is so thick kevin: TRIPLEEEETS nozomi: i'm trying to figure out what's going on in the music video it's really hard. the light's distracting me fiona: it's building nozomi: is there like-
mark: yeah it sounds like EDM now with the whole build up thing gwen: if you're going to get in a fight and you had just chains hanging off of your mouth shimon: there's more variation with the bass line gwen: oh lord that would be… stressfullllll ben: in the vocal line in the rhythm cuz he went to the triplets instead of duples henry: so much so muchSOMUCH I V I V I V yunyi: ohh see time was going crazy nozomi: i like the syncopation…like whenever they use syncopation it's catchy. like the *sings* like that singing kevin: mAJOR yunyi: no we're still in the same key kevin: but there was a little major
yunyi: no not- naoki: was he saying creeping or craving?
ben: take out all the rhythm section
shimon: creeping! naoki: creeping or crepe ing? shimon: crepe?? fiona: OOWWWW ben: oh he ripped it off! naoki: WHAT actually?
ben: he ripped off his shimon: oh lip??
ben: yeah lip thing! jeremy: he just ripped his chains off… gwen: GASP GWEN: DID HE RIP THEM OUT OF HIS MOUTH???
UMU: YES Ben: He ripped it off? Dude it was in- really gross
Naoki: Did it bleed everywhere Nozomi: I just like it whenever they change the rhythm because like I guess I pay attention more to the rhythm than the harmonies. And whenever they go into the triplets I wonder what they're saying not triplets, the syncopated parts
Mark: Duhduhduhduh Nozomi: Dadadada
Mark: I actually like the chorus more- dadadadadada Umu: The rhythms there? Mark: Yeah Lindsey: The beats were just so catchy I like the dancing, their legs jiggled
(thicc thighs save lives) Davis: I liked the dancing, not for the reason- I just thought it was Davis: I thought it was well choreographed
Lindsey: I thought it was cool Davis: I like their very aggressive, very underground hardcore aesthetic they were providing us
Lindsey: Yeess Lindsey: It was very good aesthetic
Davis: Yeah Umu: There you go ok so what do you like about this specific one musically Naoki: Uh it makes me wanna eat crepes Crepeing, crepeing, crepeing
(omg why) Three two onee Ben: Yeah come on that's rude
Naoki: I didn't know what it was. he said crepeing, I thought it was craving or creeping Ben: I thought you said it was creeping
Shimon: I said it was creeping Naoki: Someone sai- you said crepeing then Shimon: no Ben: I think it was you, we'll watch the video again, it's you
Naoki: No I never said crepe Umu: AHAHHAHA FIGHT Naoki: I said craving or creeping I couldn't tell
Shimon: You said cripping Ben: But you're the most rude out of all of us so-
Shimon: HAHAHHAHAH Naoki: I…. Beg your pardon Fiona: It was just.. it was so angsty but then it didn't really go where I wanted it to after like it would build up and then it would be the chorus, I didn't really like the chorus I think, I don't like it
Henry: Cuz the chorus was one four one four and then when it came to all of the other verses it was just one one one one.. You have red hair that means you're edgy Fiona: Oh I'm edgy, I don't like one four one one one one one I like nine chords Henry: One one one one one Umu: Hah you missed it, now I wanna replay it Gwen: That rup- that riff is good, oh god oh god AHHH Umu: HEHEHHE
Gwen: AHH Gwen: That dude has like chains comin off- huuuuhhhh Umu: So ok what did you like about this one musically
Gwen: I liked the political statement that the government is oppressive and you will never win Jeremy: Uh well I liked the dancing
Gwen: HAHAHAHAHHAH Jeremy: And also the music was really cool. It was like, it had a nice beat and it was like I don't know it was like slow but it was also fast I don't know how to explain it it was cool
Gwen: It was like a slow jam But it was still a jam, yeah
Jeremy: Yeah Yunyi: See that was-
Kevin: AWWEESOMEEE Kevin: Oh sh*t
Yunyi: Hahahaha
Umu: HAHAHHA Umu: CAREFUL WITH MY HEADPHONES PLEASE!!! Yunyi: Ok but that was a- can we make a comment how that was a true ???? Kevin: Yeess it was a ??? outro, the entire epilogue was-
Yunyi: No no that is ??? in the truest ?? form Kevin: That's true
Yunyi: Ok Yunyi: A picardy third, we say picardy third a lot when the minor song jumps to parallel major all of a sudden but that was like a true picardy third as in it happens at the very end of the song
Kevin: Exactly Kevin: Forget whistle
Yunyi: To resolve, yeah for- for- to resolve all the minor stuff that happened earlier And this is because people in the Baroque times thought that it was bad/unholy to end on- in the minor key so Umu: Um did- which one did you like better Lucky One or Monster Gwen: This one Umu: Ok Monster
Jeremy: Yeah um this one Mark: I think Lucky One Nozomi: I like that- I really like that fifths, you know that little section in Lucky One Like a lot
Mark: Cuz they- I feel harmonically this was more like all of them singing in almost unison all the time, and that one they had more like variety like they had sometimes in the verses they had harmonies and a lot of backup vocals So this one sounded more aggressive and punchy But I think I like Lucky One better cuz it was kind of more variety Yunyi: Oh both were so good
Kevin: I like Monster more Umu: I like Lucky One
Kevin: Really
Yunyi: I think, yeah I think I like Monster more Kevin: It just throws down so hard!!! Umu: Which one did you like better
Lindsey: Mosnter Davis: Lucky One yeah Well I- yeah no Lucky One Ash: So which one did yall like better Fiona: The first one for sure, absofruitly
Henry: First one absolutely hands down no contest Umu: So I'm guessing you guys like Monster better than Lucky One Naoki: Yeah
Shimon: Lucky One? Umu: That was the first one that was the one where like-
Shimon: Oh the one with the doctors Ben: No not- yeah Naoki: There was blow- the blowing up Shimon: Blowing up nurse, with the visor
Naoki: Of the nurses
Umu: Yeah Ben: They did more experimental stuff, like the beginning was super laid back with kind of like grungy hard edgy Naoki: But it still had a bunch of like intense pauses
Ben: Yeaahh Naoki: Which made it gripping
Ben: And the- yeah they made it really tense Shimon: There was a lot more variation as well When it came to rhythm and even just the style
Ben: Mhm for sure
