Composing Secrets šŸŽµ 5 Ways To Write a Drum Fill

hey what's up guys it's Josh I'm here with another episode of composing secrets this time is a special episode where I'm going to be playing on my little drum pad okay and we are going to work on drum fill ideas so I actually come from a drumming background and played for probably 15 16 years now since I was a teenager and I also have a lot of experience doing private lessons for drum drumset playing so I thought it'd be fun to actually talk about how to write for drum fills because maybe a lot of you aren't drummers maybe you play other instruments and coming from this perspective I wanted to share some ideas so let's talk about the approaches now the first approach I want to talk about is the busy and flowing type of fill so for instance you've heard this before right well yeah you don't always have to do sixteenths and in succession cascading down the set you can also do stuff like this more creatively okay that's from smells like teen spirit Nirvana so that little fill that I just played is a big fill but it's when you break it down is there's still sixteenth notes but they're all playing individually in succession okay alright the next idea is doing the opposite where rather than being busy it's choppy and there's there's spaces in between it can be syncopated so I'll call it choppy and syncopated so for instance here's the one from the sweater song by Weezer or you can combine the busy in flowing with the choppy and you can get something like this okay that's from little wean Jimi Hendrix all right so moving on another drum fill idea number three would be groove based so rather than going off of what you're playing which is usually going to be the hi-hat kick and snare okay rather than and then coming out of that to doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo the drum fill you can actually stay on on those instruments but change the the beat enough where it's almost it sounds like a different thing going on and it essentially would be a drum fill idea so for instance in the Amy Winehouse song you know I'm no good there's a part in the course where she goes I cheated myself alright so the last two measures of that phrase is very varied from the first two and almost it becomes a drum fill idea also not only that here's another little section here right high hats are also good just playing around with those ideas and opening the hi-hat so that's one idea for the groove based another idea for groove bass is to flip the snare in the bass drum on its head so normally the kick is on one snares on two well have the snare on one and they kick on two so for instance so that's that's the idea they're now moving on we have borrowing from other meters so number four is borrowing from from other meters for instance the song come together by Beatles is a straight time duple meter right but in the beginning it has this sound so having fills borrowed from that world the the six eight or twelve eight world is really cool you can also do the opposite you can borrow from straight time if you're in a swing so like a lot of times I'm in jazz drumming you can do this right all I'm doing is going one and two and three and four in or one-e-and-a two and three and four in rather than triple that triplet triplet triplet okay and the last idea is Colin responds so if I wanted to formulate my fill in a way or structural it in a way that it's one section is a little different than the other section in contrast it would be essentially a call-and-response idea so here's an a common response idea okay all right that's the calling response first half is right second half is okay here's another idea it's also good to think of this in long term or a longer form so rather than one bar maybe it's a two bar or even a four bar fill so it's more soloistic okay so anyways these are all fun ideas to to work on but essentially when you are making a song or if you're composing something it's it's good to have these wells or categories to draw from and then from there you have something to work with and develop so I hope you guys learned something new today and if you guys like my videos please subscribe to watch more I'll see you next time you
