Creating an Immersive AV system at Amos Rex museum

Creating an Immersive AV system at Amos Rex museum

We started planning in 2013. We started building in 2016 and
we opened about a month ago. My name is Kai Kartio. I’m the director of Amos Rex,
the new art museum in Helsinki. This is a private art museum built by
the association Konstsamfundet. Founded by businessman Amos Anderson,
who died in 1961. It’s a combination of old and new, a combination of the old Glass Palace (Lasipalatsi), which is a masterpiece of Finnish modernist architecture from the 1930s. And the new exhibition spaces, we are in the entrance hall of those, which were built under the Lasipalatsi Square,
behind the old building. When we were looking for a partner for sound, it was very nice for us that one of the leading
companies in the world happened to be Finnish. And happened to be a company for which
the re-use of resources and durability and thinking on the long term,
was a very important thing. Our first exhibition – it’s a project by
the Japanese artist collective teamLab. They are the people in the world
who make the most advanced, the most crazy, really immersive projections. So what they are doing is a kind of virtual reality, but the kind of virtual reality that you can experience freely in the space with all your senses and interacting with the works of art. It is based on the most advanced laser projectors, extremely powerful computers, and sound is a very important component in this. It’s not only about seeing.
It’s very much about hearing. My name is Jorma Saarikko and I’m the owner of the company called Pro AV Art Oy. I’m the person behind all the technique of this museum and also the opening exhibition. We have five different installations
inside the building and a lot of equipment. 137 projectors, and audio cables was
about two kilometres for the speakers. I told teamLab that I really like to use Genelec and actually they told me that this is the most impressive sound case for them ever. We are quite ambitious, we are glad to admit it in a way. The high technical level of what we do,
what we offer for our public is very important for us. Using the technique of museums worldwide,
the highest level museums in the world gives me the input that I also
need to use the best products and Genelec is so great. I have used it all my life and
the feedback has been fantastic.
