How to make a pitfall trap | Natural History Museum


What you need Tray, Trowel, ID guide, Yoghurt pot Step 1. Scout Choose a location for your trap
on flat ground near vegetation Step 2. Dig Use a trowel
to dig a small hole Step 3. Assemble Place a clean yoghurt pot
in the hole Fill any empty space
around the pot with soil Ensure the pot is level
with the ground Step 4. Wait Check every few hours
or leave overnight Step 5. Examine Empty the trap into
your tray Look to see what creatures
have wandered in Step 6. Record Take photographs and use
ID guides or online resources to identify what kind of
invertebrates you have caught Step 7. Release Carefully release
back to a sheltered spot Return the area to how you found it
