Kentucky Justice S01E02 | The Escape Artist

in a county famous for bloodshed and lawlessness tell me your hands hit the Taser deputies are on the hunt for an elusive fugitive couldn't lean forward he had a bird's-eye view but then a nighttime roundup of drug felons Hank up these people searching don't get chef Hearst sends deputies scrambling to cast a net over Harlan let me see your hands we get out there with you know everybody's trashed and sometimes I trash is dangerous and when deputies respond to a call for help they get caught in a deadly standoff with a shot gun wielding perp he's been here he's bleeding pretty bad you know we've had a history of drug dealers corruption all these other things which dirty the house the house being Harlan County I view myself as a house cleaner you know I'm sort of the the merry maid of law enforcement I I just wanted a clean house and today he's hunting down a criminal on the run its mortgage a how's it going we've got a war on Travis Perkins do you know what really is an affair you know Harlan County everyone knows everyone in some fashion which actually makes my job easy sometimes because I can call someone and say I'm looking forward so on so so be the third hassle with Travis Perkins is wanted for skipping out of a drug treatment program ordered by the court in lieu of prison time Travis Perkins has these charges burglary unauthorized use of motor vehicle and I think there's a drug possession charge that will he's been arrested numerous times and I'm sure he's a known runner so the sheriff's put deputy Travis Freeman one of his youngest and fastest deputies on the case Travis I want a motormen tagging officer he's still kind of young in the job but he's doing an excellent job learning Travis would be the kind of guy that I would describe as silent but daily you never know he's around a lot of times but when the time when the time counts you know he's there the 24-year old deputy will run point on the arrest fanny straps Burton's now he's been known to wear his hair like a mohawk sometimes too but mainly no favorite looks or similar that most of times in this warrant it's my district my case I'm gonna get this guy but he still gets some free advice from the veteran when you know you can actually – gonna most likely run you don't want to pull a muscle so don't hurt a little bit of stretching there's gonna be spontaneous they don't know they're running yet what are you doing I'm stretching out dude you're the senior man here okay hey I'm stretching – we do stretching to start up ready to row second house in left will be a White House at the yellow house is the first house that's his father there's family lives right around there they may turn into a halter you know heated argument or even an altercation you don't know what's gonna happen with these warrants you don't know whether they're gonna run whether they're gonna fight you so I mean there's a certain level of stress that goes into serving every one of them because it's the fear of the unknown I think he'll run if he doesn't run that's fine but just just be ready if he does you know Travis is our young pup of the bunch so I will say Oh Travis is gonna handle this we'll see how he works it out and see how cunning he is all right you guys be careful right yes sir good thing – call me okay you need anything you guys go in front I'm going back correct rest but they're suspects not just a runner he also has an EPO which is a merchant protective order from I believe it's his girlfriend there was some type of physical violence there so I mean that's even more of a reason to get him off the streets he is a threat to somebody so we have to find him this is always a little bit touchy situation when the guy you're looking for Lee it was around Oliver's family you know blood is thicker than water is what most people say and no matter what you've done whatever mistake you've made they're still going to back your family time is of the essence once we cross these tracks people were going to know that we're in town they're gonna start calling people they approach with caution the suspect and his family could be watching Sheriff's Office make sure happens to be in there need to talk to you about need come to the door Sheriff's Office Sheriff's Office you got anything ain't got nothing here right his dad lives next door you won't stay put there I've got a perfect view of that back door where is father's gonna check there okay me and Daniel walk over there then walk over there I'll keep eyes on are you is its uncle okay that's your house you have to eat or anything like that would you know okay what's the chances of him being in there right now they say that parties all night flips all day don't you ever seen that come out or anything like that zoom during today he's got an EPO on him from Mary Bennett is that his girlfriend's baby Bella's right here and drive one okay that's what that's over with and he's got two warrants for his drug court violations okay good take the door up there so then keep dancing I use my aborted minutes out uh-huh so he wants to kick the door in their search okay all right didn't by appreciate you his uncle advised he's in the house he just kicked the door down it's my house kick it down okay last chance open the door chef's up here you need to say something on the County Sheriff's Office in here you need to let us know what gravis [Applause] you got anything Danny don't you nothing in that corner door let's see nothing there I need to check the basement it's not been cleared yet watch out down there okay Sheriff's Office with the ward you're in here show us your hands right here one right there yellow pants blue shirt we see your hands show me your hands step out of here right now step out show me your hands get the Taser she's not the fine you better show me you're hearing it taste crawl over here it's not their suspect what's your name where's he at took off with white I thought I heard some rustling Oh Travis where's he at where's he right there yellow pants blue shirt we see your hands show you your hands step out of here right now step out show me your hands get the Taser she's not the plan you better show me other people get rigged it tastes crawl over here it's not there suspect Travis Perkins the wanted felon thereafter with a raft of charges it's a woman and she's hiding in Perkins basement for a reason what's your name where's he and took off which boy thank you where's he Han where is he yeah how'd he get out the house what's your name welcome please dibs no Perkins has slipped through the deputy's fingers giving himself a big head start on the law possibly by serving up his friend Ashley he said he told me to come down here he told me to come down here hoddan basement cuz the cops are coming there's a possibility that he may have did that you know to kind of get the heat off him so I said well you kind of left you out to dry you know but what is he to you is it's a boyfriend or something where would he go we're in the mountains you're not under arrest but you're detained until we figure out what I was going out here okay so subscribe you some shoes deputy Danny Lewis keeps an eye on Ashley I thought I heard some rustling up in the wood while the others fan out into the woods for Travis but there are more than 260,000 acres of forest to hide in in Harlan County and mountains that rise over 4,000 feet he had a bird's-eye view of us I'm 38 turning into coxton so he could have been gone a good three minutes before he even got to his house without a k-9 unit the odds of finding him are slim to none anything they're not yeah when I went this clearing casing nothing he's gone but the deputies may have some leverage standing out there we're gonna make sure you see got any warrants on you okay turn around for me you got three warrants on you we'll figure it out here in a few minutes let's see what we can do here just a few minutes have you seen in here dispatch confirms she's wanted for writing bad checks we'll get we'll go to the office and get her processed so she's gonna be going to jail so what happened did he just look out the window and say yes coming or something why didn't you just hang out if you would have been up there you might not gotten much trouble hot and makes it look worse all in all not a bad night for deputy Travis's first time heading up the case he's put one wanted suspect behind bars and another on notice the way this went tonight obviously were disappointed but we're far from over we're gonna keep going until we get this guy but the nights just getting started for sheriff lipfird and his men say Guyana weapon he started yelling for backup shots fired shots fired get me back up now you could tell by the tone of his voice he needed help he needed it fast we were running jumping you know climbing vehicles I know a lot about the situation don't have from them a lot about situation back to he's requested backup means we're heading their way the officers on the radio were responding to a domestic dispute it's not one of sheriff lipfird's men but it's still the brother in arms we're going on a call Lakes Police Department they stated they had a man with a gun trying to break into a house a rifle I don't know if the officers then proceeded up or if he's turned on the officer we're not sure yet but we're on our way up there now okay before I'm gonna need a m4 mag trying to get there as quick as we can let's have to use extreme caution right now I'm topping out at 1:15 you know you get nervous adrenaline pumping and everything main focus is to get there to our guy make sure he's all right I'm gonna protect each other this just shows you how quick a domestic can get out of hand how quick stuff you just come at you at that point I became a standoff give you one leg don't full mag step out of the truck the first thing I see when I get there is a bunch of cops taking a tactical position behind some cars officer drew Wilson of the Lynch PD gets the Sheriff's Department up to speed come up here pulled up didn't always interrupting keep the headlights out on me I started walking upon he said he's doing but he had his head down thought he's passed out he rides up takes us way to Barry I seen move them shotgun out the window fucking board and show me his hands he wouldn't break though fearing for his life officer Wilson riddled the truck with bullets I now seat the guy in the truck I see bullet holes in the windshield or the sides of the truck I've got a perfect line of thought we see a weapon he's been here he's bleeding pretty bad my instinct is to get him out of the truck and my concern was other law enforcement officers I didn't want him to reach in there pull that gun out and shoot another cop I don't want a second let me send me people's up here okay I'll call ya we start telling what crafted inside the house he said he can entertain it's a dagger inside you said he can suddenly the suspects actions catch sergeant Miron southerland's I noticed that his hands are laying on top of the the door and I can see him covered in blood I've got a perfect line of sight they pulls the gun right here said I'm going up I'm gonna graphic now us you know the fact he's covered in blood I hated to do that I didn't want to do that but it had to be done but the State Police won't give the green light I made a suggestion you know now's the time to grab you know we got a special response team on the way I don't know who said it was somebody said that I shouldn't let that guy bleed out but you know what it just disgusts me it really does because I feel that there's a part of this job where we have to put our lives on the line that's what we do if you don't want to do it go flip burgers get out of the job I got this trigger control they're gonna try to make contact more you Muslim or you muzzle Meyers upper I start making my approach and I grab his arms Oh go go go go go unlock it a locker it's go time sergeant Sutherland makes his move to when the armed standoff and detain the bleeding gunman I'm gonna grab you know that's not the smartest thing in the world to do but it had to be done at that point when I seen my urn make contact with the guy that's when I knew we had our opportunity we had to go right there yeah oh love it when I tried to open the door but it wouldn't open cuz he was lying on the locks so at that point he had to come out through the window the suspects been shot several times and he's still resisting he's got our lock over go in again it's a stressful situation for Travis and it's something that you know I guarantee he's never been in a situation like a fool and I don't want the insured Ian what he's doing to mess up his job so I tell traps as I get in there and push dig deep Travis giddy Travis was having a hard time getting him out because he had wedged itself under the steering wheel to prevent us from pulling him out I began to grab him try to straighten his legs out so we can get him out the window he was in such a position where he was just dead white he just he it felt like a thousand pounds it really did they need to get the suspect medical attention before he bleeds out we got we got the guy looked bad he looked really bad day and we got him out on the ground while the troopers handcuffed him let's sound the handcuffs are like angels when you've got someone in custody you pretty one all the fights over and you know you can catch your breath a little bit come on keep talking I'm gonna keep you talking we got help coming for you all right you can't go to sleep right now okay is he that guy is extremely lucky to be alive right now I hope he understands how lucky he is to be alive and how close he came to you know for being over for me hey I got you over here we'll just make sure nobody's too weapon because I was is evidence right now I rode up on scene there's people running with me saying oh god he's my best friend he's my cousin you know we had ordered him to get back from the scene so we're just making sure nobody comes tries to contaminate the evidence excellent job excellent job moving water no good at that point it went from affecting the rest to me make sure my guys were safe got your clothes check your clothes yeah sure I'm sorry son I got it off you know you grab him do not go there so I'm hurry hepatitis because the doctor get checked you got blood all over you guys let's get your vest on the only thing I hate about situation that I was covered in blood I had no gloves no protection he was it was all over me my best my arms and the only thing all through my mind is oh god what's this guy guy you know how many times in my career I've not jumped out of card gloves probably ten what one today mr. Knight yeah no blows you need go get thoroughly checked you need to get a tetanus shot cuz you got a little scratch even a minor hole yeah you need to check me check him thoroughly y'all check each other bring me the water in the hand sanitizer please blood-borne pathogens that's my biggest concern you don't want people having a blood you know where they gave hepatitis HIV anything and so I'm just worried about their well-being when it comes to blood-borne pathogens right now this job takes you putting your ass online that's what it takes you don't get sit in a car in your pretty low uniform and enjoy life you know we get out there we handle everybody's problems we take everybody's trash out that's what we do and sometimes that trash is dangerous guess what it's part of the job I think mainly because when I grabbed him up everyone was putting on went up it went up my arms yeah Guinea go hospital after a bloody call like this deputy Travis must check in with the hospital but first he checks in with his wife okay well I'm just gonna tell you just in case you hear anything we had a shootout up and lanced a little bit he locked himself inside the vehicle no no get him out so grabbed him pushed him out the window so I got blood all over me Myron got her all over him so we're all going to the hospital get their blood drawn just to make sure all right all right let's didn't want you to worry about anything now let me to we go from a may important a gun and a young police officer this place officer having to use deadly force to defend himself to section 7 the guy's life so we go we go from an enforcement side to life-saving in the blink of an eye that's our job tactically speaking how was the tickle to death because of my guys perform the way they trained with the other job we left thank God it's over it's been a week since Travis Perkins a wanted thief and drug criminal slipped from the sheriff's grasp and in two Harlan County's rugged mountains now with the heat off sheriff lipfird thinks the fugitive may have finally returned home and since deputy Travis out to investigate there's a chance where if he doesn't have anywhere else to say he may come back at the same house see there's a couple trucks up here loading stuff up my takes off around like a let's go on model this place they got move out yeah oh man this is another problem same where Travis went huh now we've been playing it all out looking out there I just take a quick look ya'll don't care there's just a bunch of construction workers up there everything's cleaned out of it it's a different house from when first time I went in there they were completely changing around changing the locks the doors the floors so yeah I seen Travis huh he just had he had a couple warrants on him apparently the uncle took that and he's gonna rent out different people now so he's not gonna be there he's definitely not allowed there anymore that's it but well we appreciate it when you run into roadblocks you're gonna try something else out and it'll be enough and you go back to square one there it gets very very frustrating the hunt continues right here or bloody Horan got its name from that 22 people killed right here trying to unionize the Harlan County Sheriff fights crime in a coal mining region of Kentucky with a blood-stained past in the 1930s the county earned the nickname bloody Harlan right there is what all the Fighting's over out there cold Harlan County was a battleground for clashes between striking coal miners strike breakers mine companies security forces and sheriff's deputies most people in this area know what the infamous Bale Crossing is apparently some shooting started worked its way down through here to the tracks and this is where a lot of people got killed the numbers I've always been told later 22 million killed right from here basically from the crossing up to the train depot which is quartered a half-mile we had Union Wars and we just had people that were just stone cold killers I mean a lot of people were killed just because something as simple as a card game things like that there's been a lot of police officers killed in this county there's been a lot of people just killed in this County and it's that violent history that keeps sheriff lipfird and his men prepared today it is it's a rare day off for deputy Travis Freeman and he's hitting the gym he wants to be in top form in case he runs into Travis Perkins the wanted felon he's been chasing for two weeks we've got anything that's on Travis in coxton no look we'll get a man depending on our mind especially yours you know being your district so we work out hard for helps catch these guys got some warts on a guy named Travis it stresses me out because I'll sudden you get a runner and you got time to stretch out you just got to go sell mean that's another motivator to get you in here Keeping Up cardio too right oh yeah I mean every time I've dealt with somebody either ran or tried to start a scuffle it's always been there just run off pure adrenaline yeah I'm gonna catch my breath you know Travis and cotton is gonna let you have a break sip of water [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] all these warrants are culmination the road units if they're a runner if we were going to fight put a mark on your packet tomato red mark my dangers tonight sheriff lipfird staging a mass roundup of alleged offenders wanted on drug related charges it's the first time we've done a not round up once we get to three people everybody's on the phone to the phone tree don't dilly-dally don't play around loofah round get in get your suspect get out but when you're serving an arrest warrant the moment you go into that community most of the criminal element they support will work like the neighborhood watching in Reverse they have their little phone trees going they call each other everybody knows you're there I mean you stick out like a Nick a man with his hair on fire it's extremely extremely dangerous the handcuff these people searching don't get SEP hurt make sure you got a flashlight make sure you've got your gloves any questions remove your covers they'll follow its prey to the night of God you put your shoe deportation around the sheriff and his deputies if they do their job tonight myself when she walks over all of us tonight God it was a safe night for us in Jesus name we do pray amen amen amen y'all get saddled up let's go we'll burn daylight ladies Barba's team serves around 600 warrants a year in this roundup they'll be serving 40 and the dicey has stopped on their list is the first address this first subject that we're going after he has likely been down the community apparently threatened some people with an SKS rifle tastes sort of a cheap knockoff version I k47 it but her Tony hit me and a flatmate for a bad evening finkles tries to go to work with this we figured we'd go ahead knock that one in the hair off the back get that thank you Carrie [Applause] I'm now feeling a little nervous just want to get this first one under our belt and go from there there you go Chris right here hey Travis enter a guy see hands both of you hold up you got it not only do deputies nab the suspect they also pick up another man with a warrant on it we have warrants for every district we've got to work quick because I'd say right now cell phones are being dialed so we got a we got to go go go hit him hard in a fast the jams back here going in the car we've got about 10 more left in Harlan they're all made so everybody's making phone calls right now let's check one let's see why this guy was it's now the road white boy this car stopped in the middle of the road and deputy Chris Brewer doesn't like the looks of it how we're doing how come we just parked out in the road for what's your name what's your last name where he buy out some her mistake I'm not the one we looking for while deputy Chris checks to see if there's a warrant Travis recognizes a familiar face I don't marry very well we've went to school together we've grown up together and she's always been a you know pretty decent girl from as far as I know I always willing to help people with anything you know she was pretty smart the car was this park in the middle of the road so I initiated to stop and you know see what was going on and ended up being one who's looking for this got warrants it's not- pounds under $90 four days in jail charges were possession Joel said second-degree yeah baby got a young man yes when he find a sane woman would come take these kids taking Mary to jail is the easy part getting someone to take her three young kids is a different story where's your mom right now we're just trying to look at a family member to take custody of her three children she has a vehicle with her because it did not we're gonna have to call social services and and it's my policy I prefer to play some family member it's enough trouble Matias is your parents go to jail been in jail before Kent County what was the bottom option ok what's the feel count off then yeah that's why you don't that's why yeah I mean I was lucky suboxone is a drug that he's used to win you off of other drugs her pill bottle says she's supposed to have so many suboxone in it she's nowhere near that count when you start doing the math she's either selling dope or she's abusing it one of the others I've been trying to stay out of Charlie and it's been 30 years I love you like before month I come back tomorrow and I can your virus people around Mary's not a bad person people we arrest are not only bad people that do bad things the way I look at it is I'm gonna treat everybody with as much respect as you only possible – you won't let me do that you [Applause] we're taking thinking buddy sheriff lipfird's got a situation on his hands he's arresting 24 year-old Mary bar go on an outstanding warrant for drug charges but she's got her three upset children with her and the sheriff can't find a family member to look after them you know these guys these people we stopped a car this girl 50 feet from her mother's house and her mother thinks that we probably walked on her which we don't she won't come to the door to come pick her grandkids up it's forcing the issue the rule applies call social services which is going to force temporary foster care the kids are always the victims people to sports appears less like these kids I'm all muscle soon sheriff lipfird's not having any luck but sergeant Miron Southerland catches a break we found a family who she will take the kids the mother children was okay with it those family members now it's up to deputy Travis to drive his old grade school classmate to jail made you come back tomorrow at the Korman maybe a workout the thing about Harlan County is like once we go onto graduate high school you know it's people you don't see anymore great I was just for two years oh yes I came back after I switch to Atlanta for yeah a lot of my friends from school if I see them now there's totally different people some of them are taking the wrong route kind of messed up their lives a little bit I'm sure if you would ask them about me they'd be like well he took it a completely different change he's a cop you know I went the complete opposite we're gonna go in here we'll go up to the jail okay sitting I will talk to you minute sheriff lipfird's got a son the same age as Mary so watching Harlan's young folks take the wrong path weighs heavy on his heart you want to make a better life eat here Drive you get out of here you got to help yourself we can get back the lake steam clean slate here's your opportunity okay tomorrow you know if you have three small children take care of the better watch out for you kids because it's your responsibility to your obligation you got three small children back at that quarter think long and hard about it to that that's totally up to you all right Chris go ahead finish that I should take her out after finish citation she's she's gonna end up the overdose from some of these days and she'll never even get her kids back 24-year old and destroyed the lottery that's just a crash a the team rounds up 18 suspects in the Knights dragnet but they're still after one last man Travis Perkins the thief and drug offender sheriff's officers have been chasing for three weeks and deputy Travis just got a hot tip and who was the tip where'd it come from anonymous female caller she can give a name number nothing like that she said in the basement area of that house Perkins has been spotted at his grandmother's house and the town of coxton the team quickly Huddle's to devise a game plan we have a house number mr. house description most house to look like like green house a dark green trim they say it was the third house on the right mm-hmm yeah see right here you come off 38 when you get a tip like that and then pinpoint it they said hey he's in this house he's in the basement staying you know you're hoping it's got some truth to it good thing is that being dark now the trees there huffing boc is crossing the coxton breeds need to make sure that you not only have eyes on that house but anyhow around it in case we're going to the wrong house yeah ready let's go sir I get all amped up I get jittery you need to make sure that you not only have eyes on that house but any house around it in case we're going to the wrong house yeah ready let's go sir I got all amped up again jittery the deputies just got a tip that they're wanted felon Travis Perkins has been spotted at his grandmother's house deputy Travis will run the operation and hands out the assignments me and Mitch we're gonna try get set up when I realizes it and Chris is gonna come from Mark you didn't make contact with the homeowner okay so I don't freak out and then he's gonna talk to her cuz he's he's had dealings with her before okay okay we know where the house is but we don't know what the house looks like we had no prior opportunity to stake out the house we don't know if there's windows in the house but if there's doors we're just gonna have to assess on point when we get there hey are you going to the front door with Chris once yeah once Chris might I'll go to the front door with him okay unless unless you got the Barlow cave unless they see me running before we get there what are we waiting on yeah let's go deputies Travis Mitch Alford and chaplain Chris Hickey head out in an unmarked car they'll be the advance team for a convoy of marque sheriff's vehicles to follow when we around this corner they're gonna give like a minute and a half two minute count and then they're gonna fall in behind us so it look gives us about a minute to get set up okay how are we gonna start easy anytime you start with felony warrants you know you got to assume that that threat levels up there because I mean you cops leave you got somebody that's been running for a while so you never know what they're gonna do you know to not go back to jail mr. Perkins has been rather difficult we've had a few tips but I was turn to be handed the fact that when you put something less time in somebody after that run from you you put so much investigation you know so much work into you really just want to get the guy cinch everything up and to get to this bridge around to kill these overhead Lots this little kacha tanka the closer you get to the house the more your heart stops beating knowing that me and Mitch are gonna get out worse around this house by ourselves no way else is gonna be there what if he sees us and bolts and we lose him again that's all going through your mind I don't know which house this is gotta make sure to ID it correctly green house green trim right stop here three on bottom three on top Travis and Mitch scrambled to cover the outside of the house in case their suspect bolts I post up on the corner and that's when it's really sitting in it it's going down right now I hear that you know that's just one of those moments I go up place cuffs on the guy and that sounded the cuffs click and it's just lucky closing the book in custody 29 unit the hands in custody why'd you take off laying right there you guys made contact that he tried to come out the door and yelled Sheriff's Office and ran back in I'll push the door open went in had him at tighter point and he surrendered went down on the ground good job playing work at PacSun the deputies can finally breathe the sigh of relief the three-week manhunt has come to an end don't let you get away this time lose that cigarette here I still all right we needed to walk him outside and put him in the car and realize he's in custody he's in the back of a police car that's when it kind of sets in today and you're like yeah because all that work wasn't for nothing they paid off now there's I'm talking about baby you see her Thurman how long you known the cops been looking for you save the day I walked out in the girl court I figured the middle for me oh yeah yeah we've been looking for you for quite a while five six long since everyone has choices to make you gonna been a police officer himself but at some point he's taking another route and it's just kind of let him down the wrong road so hopefully after all this is taken care of and he gets his stuff straightened down hopefully can get back on the right path it's a big catch for one of Harlan County's youngest deputies you know my guys they came up a good plan and executed it flawlessly and as soon as the old board decided to play one more reason running games well we had games too so Travis got his men I'm sure that gave him some satisfaction you
