Marie: Portrait of an Abstract Artist

(Music) Her work has been featured in galleries around the world. Now critically acclaimed artist Marie Renfro is bringing her colorful creations home to Allen, Texas. I’m more interested in expressing emotion than I am in the literalness. I’m not interested in just a picture that the camera can take. I’m more interested in my interpretation of it, or the emotion I could put into it. Most painters probably do a sketch on their paper or their canvas to start with…I do not. So I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen and I love that. I love the surprises that I get. When I make that first stroke of color and it hits the wet paper and it just spreads and fuses…then I come back with another color and it fuses with that…and you know it spreads it sometimes where maybe you don’t want it but sometimes it’s better than where you thought you wanted it. Why not take the risk and have the surprises that happen? That’s part of the joy of painting is the happy accidents or the surprises. I’m thrilled the City of Allen helps the Art Alliance be able to do this and have this space. A lot of people feel like it’s scary to go to an art gallery but if it’s right here in Allen and they know that the shoe store’s across the street… I think they’ll be more apt to come and see the work. And we’ve worked really hard to let people know about the show because I think it’ll be a really good thing for this space and for the future of the gallery if people know it’s here. Allen has probably ninety five thousand people at least now, they had nine hundred and fifty when I moved here. So there’s a lot of people that don’t know who I am I’m sure. And I’ll be thrilled that they can come and see my work and I can get to meet them. And so yeah, it means a lot to me that it’s here in Allen…and awful lot. Renfro’s show “Then and Now” is one of many free exhibits hosted by Blue House Too gallery at Watters Creek. Show information and gallery hours can be found at CityofAllen.org/Calendar.
