Mike Hidalgo on Comedians Interviewing Musicians! Live performance and interview.

yeah he doesn't know yet he doesn't know yet yeah chabuk Scottie traffic's really crazy me not you okay so I played a gig with her like like yeah joy with my new theme song it's so good that's what's cool about Austin though is like on the one hand you can look at it as competitive but on the other hand you can be like I have so many people raise them together and do shitty right that's right it's cool it's it's collaborative stupid especially with music you know I think there's a reason why musics pretty much again just like commie finding two minutes yes dee dee dee dee no Jackie Manson No Oh then we all got fired you know that was a hate crime I don't know if I can it sounds good on the podcast you know that's fair again we'd like to thank the Hyatt again for having us and our beautiful volunteers that have orchestrated that thank you so much yes without any further ado I think we should like pop off into this lets pop off I just wanna you're so so youthful tonight I'm really pop off oh my god we're here at the Hyatt this is episode 93 I know we've been here for a long time it's kind of exciting at the dedication yes I mean I can't honestly the fact they put up with my ass of this long visa in its own whoo we have a very special guest for this next stand mail section we like to kick off the show with Stan man like stalker fan mail familiar okay we have some people write in from all over the country they want to hear some from you so we're gonna get some questions but before that like to introduce he's an incredible Austin music critic he is the critic of all critics this guy he likes to call himself he's so controversial that he has never been published in any Austin publication at all no and trust his truth he's actually the godfather of Peter Blackstock so it's fine perfect please welcome to the stage ladies and gentlemen big house yes Bick good to have you back it's been a while I mean the last time we saw you was at the Brixton yeah but ago yeah the bixton is what they should have called it big you're here to ask them Stan mail question you know I hear what I'll start off and then you can ask the next one oh okay a question from Raza and fluffy landing Florida so cool you spent time with one eye doll what's the craziest thing that happened while on tour Oh craziest thing that happened while on tour I would have to say would be in Colorado Springs I got food poisoning no I got food poisoning right before I had so as a roadie for a band called one I doll and we ate we ate some Indian food right before the gig and you know as I'm setting up I start to feel a little something in my stomach and it's snowing mind you it's like it's snowing and I think it's about five degrees outside and you know suddenly as I'm setting things up I realize I have to puke so I ran outside and I puked in the snow and then as I was coming back outside I realized things that had come out the other end as well and if you've never been to like a heavy-metal bathroom it is one of the most hardcore places you can do your business pre puke yeah yeah exactly and I also had to run lights so if you can imagine having food poisoning while having to run lights for a band while there's a lot of noise and things going on and we were direct support for a band called mushroom head and and during the gym during the changeover I had to go set up you know all the stuff while with food poisoning and at one point I had to run outside into the snow and all the members were right there and I just I just you know vomited right in front of all of them they all started laughing at me like you know they they just all started laughing at me and pointing and so I went back in and set things up and then I loaded out and about negative two degree weather and I would say that's probably the craziest thing that that happened to me on tour well see the puke man yeah that's hmm that's where you find out whether or not you really want to do this big have you ever barf well seeing live music oh yeah absolutely from like food poisoning artists bad music yeah Duke from bad music project I'll hear ask the next one alright so this one's from Vera and greasy corner Arkansas another strip club I don't know they're definitely stripper places I love your song fly with me asking for a friend are you single and if so which dating sites can we find you on again asking for a friend now I'm just gonna go ahead and say this to you Mike that's a that's a flag flag on the play red flag that's right no I'm not single I am married to named Nikki Trevino who is amazing and who I would not be standing right here without she's been incredibly supportive over my entire musical endeavor and yeah so unfortunately no I'm not Vera and it was before all the dating sites I've seen those dating sites and I can't imagine I don't think so but yeah get a number or something maybe we can maybe talk after the show and work something out what dating shows would you be on BIC or dating what dating shows what dating sites would you be on uh a really like sandwiches so Grindr Oh Grindr they let you know how far away they are that's kind of convenient yeah there's always a subway right around the corner like to know if I can smell fresh buns that's legit my tinder profile right now literally just says too sweaty for the state is this Grindr that's it that's all it says you wouldn't believe in people know so much about Grindr when that's your profile stump grinders the with a hook up one right that's just that no it's for boys boy makes a weird it's kind of where it's a little drought I have one before I let pick ass there's okay I know you just answered like a roadie story that was about your poor health do you have any good roadie stories involving like crazy fans gnarly experiences on that end crazy fans crazy fans well there have definitely been some fans who have been very overzealous and you know very enthusiastic about their approach and very looking at you yeah I don't know I think you just got to keep in mind that that's part of the game and to try to like you know deal with that as delicately as possible because obviously those people have feelings too and you know you don't want you want to make sure that there's you know boundaries and you want to establish that right away at the same time but you also I don't know I think it's kind of counterproductive to also be you know hateful or anything like that towards them too so yeah as long as their profile yeah doing that boundaries well yeah just set boundaries maybe like I see your feelings they're valid but leave me alone yeah yeah yeah validity of their feelings like all right that's that's good what's the weirdest in a write you you ever have any like music fans or peers yeah cuz my articles were everywhere yeah sure just not anywhere published I think craziest one was when a woman showed up in my kitchen and I never invited her over mom get out you're not invited those crazy try to make me breakfast pesky mothers and their bacon you know do you have any Stan questions a what a Austin band would you love to do a mash-up with very familiar with the Austin music there are so many good bands in this town the Texas KGB trouble in the streets you know grupo Fantasma black Pumas I mean there's so many individual artists a lot of mashing yeah there's a lot of mashups that can be done and that's one of the things I like about the world album and we were actually just talking you know Austin such a cool place with so many different musicians and you could either look at it as competition or people to learn from and people to collaborate with and if I had to pick one oh that's hard that is really hard there's so many people I would probably do trouble in the streets but only because Andy Leonard their bassist slash piano player has a mug and I've always I got to play it one time and I instantly fell in love with this mug and I wanted one problem is like 3,000 bucks so I said yeah pick the one with the goodies yeah yeah the one with the most expensive instruments that's the band that wants you my third wife oh so one's like a little musical you uh have you listened to Jackie Vincent's new album I've listened to bits and pieces like the oh joy the title oh yeah oh honey feel about that what do you what do you feel I feel like a very Fresh Prince Run DMC vibe yeah she's such a mix of all these amazing different artists and she definitely is one of the most I think amazing artists to come out of this town and uh I got to play a gig with her about three years ago on this dislike Austin music TV thing and I saw her do her thing and I was like oh my god who is this amazing amazing girl she's gonna be she's gonna be a superstar that in like three years later I mean she's traveling the world and playing music and doing her thing and if any of you especially here the Hyatt have not heard a Jacqui Venson she is amazing look up Jackie and look up her amen her work look up her artistry her guitar playing she's also a classically trained pianist and she she is definitely cream of the crop here she can play some serious music yes yes we're gonna kick ass show she just is very entertaining oh yeah I would say after listening an album the two things that are missing there's no enough jazz hands or dog whistles dog whistle yeah I love a good dog whistle on an album we learned things about BIC every single time we have a lot really good to me what's why whistles who's your favorite dog whistle player Oh Stevie Ray Vaughan you don't know that about him but great dog these sites yeah you gotta flip that elbow over four times to get it yeah are you like trying to train yourself on the dog whistle or you'e like we're gonna put it earlier I didn't hear it earlier today yeah I know before I gone over here damn I should have heard you like péter pápai like the Pied Piper it was like wall dogs over there she was great Oh another question oh so you're a really great sound would you ever think about mixing it up and adding a little bit more kpop wow yeah kids love kpop it's true love kpop if there was a k-pop babies was pointing to her daughter saying she loves kpop look at her fall down well I definitely won't deny the power of kpop yeah and if there was a kpop band they wanted to do some stuff surrounding me I'd be totally down for that one where is the austin-based kpop band that's what I'd like someone find that that's fair all right that's all the stand questions we have Vic thank you so much for joining us rid of applause for big house awesome wheels free most controversial music critic yeah I'm gonna miss you back always been watching you but mostly I'll miss your scent it's like Old Spice and mothballs yeah and they've got powder and peanut butter fountain tip pen is that what that is oh absolutely it's something all right big house lazy thank you so much we're gonna listen to some more music from Mike it all goes so keep that going there's a song called butterflies hey don't you see we're gonna walk now through eternity forever in the space far beyond the human race girl we gon leave no trace cuz you know baby you make me fly in the sky oops oh hi I could butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly with a top dr. time but that city dee dee dee dee da top down oh don't you know baby there where you go my baby I go forever in the space far beyond the human cuz you know baby you make me fly in the sky oops ooh like a butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly like a butterfly girl like ha don't you know girl the way you go my baby forever into space far beyond the human race don't leave no traces cuz you know baby you make me fly in the sky rub so like a butterfly like a butterfly like da-da-da-da-da all right thank you yeah my kid all go here at the Hyatt Regency we have a donation jar in the back yes it's somewhere it's over here at yes come on mine of Anna waiting for us yes every dollar oh thank you sir okay every dollar you putting there goes to Mike please put some money in there for him we also validated parking so if you parked in the garage please see one of our volunteers or one of the bar the bar validate parking yes the bar Bilbao date your parking so head on it to them and they will make sure your parking is all set also if you have a green Pinto you are going to be towed just for shits yes because you have a green Pinto yeah hey truthfully tipping does make you more trash is nothing is like least sexy than someone who does not understand that bartenders and servers don't work for it like how dare you how dare you she looks at strong and lean to the servers are like I'm going home with her thanks you're welcome no tip your servers in your bar staff they deserve it and your musicians and your musicians come through with the entertainment that's what we do here Chris hmm this is our regular interview section we ask you not so normal regular interview questions okay because Kevin I heard not so normal human being okay I have a question you are dressed fantastically tonight for the podcast I'm just gonna do like a little my new you're giving me steampunk you're giving me like steampunk meets like Rat Pack slash like maybe you got the pins like you're going to some sort of festival so like steampunk Rat Pack festival and also think you have your hair slicked back and I'm feeling it I like it a lot we have a thing on your shoe that I think is a tambourine for tempering it's a lot what tambourine sure I was like damn buried I don't see anybody with a tambourine because it's on his foot that's genius honestly I'm gonna start stealing that Oh oh yeah I'm gonna put tambourines everywhere on my body you have to figure out where they're with that noise where's cam can hear it around the house so what inspires your fashion I need to know yeah okay so the first show that my wife took me to was a band called Sharon Jones & the dap-kings they are amazing amazing man it was life-changing not only because Sharon Jones was this amazing performer but the band behind her the dap-kings were some of the most excellent amazing musicians I've ever seen in person and they were dressed to the nines like they had suits on and it just made a huge impact on me and after that I was like I want a suit I want a suit to play my gigs and so this was the first suit that I ever bought it was a regular pinstripe suit there wasn't all this decoration on it and the reason there's all this stuff on it now and it's been customized was because uh you know I told when I doll and the merch girl Melinda Colburn is also a costume designer yeah sounds like a scary movie name like Melinda Colburn's house was raped like no that's right and making awesome suit so one time when they were on tour a tour that I couldn't go on they came through Austin I gave her my suit at the first suit that I ever bought and it's played I've been through hundreds of shows with this suit I was like do something with it you know and she did this with it and now I played this for every gig that I consider super important yeah perfect the awesome gears and stuff later and then you have like where your pocket square should be there the gears right there I love it so amazingly enough she was thoughtful enough to put reflectors so these light up so whenever I'm walking down you know dark making waves yes I got those like here yeah right on the high noon I wanna see too if you could like make a dream costume though obviously other than this because it's pretty dreamy but like are we thinking sequence we got like headdress headdress headdress headdress headdress headers something that converts into an aerial suits you could like flyer out oh yeah like one of those flying squirrels like you're like peace out Wisconsin sure straight up into the Castro yeah I've never seen again you know flying is these superpower that I would take if I get to good flying yeah pretty much that's all my dreams you just like you land in the middle of the stage and everyone's like holy yeah yeah I just flew in and then you blow them away with a musical performance they're like we even forgot about the suit so you fly out oh my god it happens and then you can really do that I'd joke I'd be like I just think about that your arms will be ripped a wing tone you're also in a couple other bands in town mm-hmm obsolete machines and you're about to go on tour with another yes I could talk about your side projects while we we've just gassed you up for a good five minutes all right so I'm a drummer and I drum for a band called obsolete machines here in town it's this psychedelic electro pop punk band and my friends Adam and Shanna who I've known since I started playing music in this town I've been playing with them for about three years it's a fun awesome band we got an album online called million white strands and their harmonies are they've been singing together for over a decade so their harmonies are just out of this world and Adam is one of the greatest lead vocalists I've ever heard and he's amazing and then I just joined a band called the Matt Gilmour band and I'm about to go on tour with them along the west coast the first date is at Lake Tahoe at the Hard Rock Cafe and then we're going to Sacramento and then Los Angeles and San Francisco and just kind of going all over the place and which I'm super excited about because I've been on the road as a roadie you know I've like helps another band do their thing for months at a time but this will be the first time I've gotten to really go out and play and do my own thing and be you know the drummer in the band and I'm super super stoked and it feels like you know things I've been working towards for about ten and a half years are finally starting to happen for you do you need roadies if you want because we will find you some this is this gotcha we will find you yeah no I just sweat my eyebrows in my mustache no that's true okay fair enough you did have a I was just going through your albums and everything you had one from 2012 the wanderer oh yeah yes album that's the cover so I'm a huge nerd and there's a game called Dark Souls and that is the title track of that EP called Dark Souls I super original I know and I actually screenshotted a picture of my character in the game and okay yeah I've been footed as the artwork for that particular EP and I used to I used to broadcast on a on a gaming platform called J TV which has now become twitch TV with a with a group called four player podcast so go on and play games and then make songs about the games I'm playing and that's where that EP came from and that's actually that I recorded that with Jason and Kimberly from 1id all yeah so that's where that comes from yeah yeah come on games yeah video games summer I'm huge I thought it was like maybe like a school picture but it does give me school picture like yeah cuz there was another one that was on it too that oh wait you're on picture yes that's what I changed it no that's my fourth grade picture sorry sorry yeah I switched it to my fourth grade picture yes and I was you and fourth grade in that picture yeah yeah like ninth grade so later I'm gonna post my fourth grade picture on the music first hands story and you guys are gonna oh I'll do mind you nearly as cute yeah so that I posted that picture one day because I thought it's funny cuz I'm you know very plump because my grandma used to make like you know what did your grandma make please talk dirty fourth grade also it's an amazing Mexican food she would make so I got a little plump and I was really funny so I posted on Facebook one day this was back when I was in a band called Nick's house band and one of the one of the fans of the band worked at a print shop took that picture and made a bunch of stickers and that picture is actually behind the BART hold on the wall which privilege to be behind the bar it's been around for so long I don't know how it got hey guy I'll see that picture like randomly like above a bathroom or you know somewhere and it's really really odd this your fourth-grade picture above a urinal I don't know I mean if he went to my school that's not no no remember when my work wife and I did this photo shoot we were did like we were trying to mock like the milk bath so he made a ranch bath ah lot of people up we made stickers and we gave like two or three hundred of them out that is the most the placements of those around town to me have been the grossest I've been taking sure of where they all are nasty nasty little I do what urinal has so many hey you know what so many at least your name is not a urinal cake because there is a there is a Kimberly toiletries or whatever company and so when you pee you're peeing on my name eggs want you to know I kind of like it though I mean I'm in for it works I have a question for you you are a mentor for King yes yeah we are yeah them a lot love it kids in New Groove for people who don't know it's a music mentorship for children in foster care it does incredible work for children around town who just honestly that outlet I can't even imagine how important that would be to express you've been a mentor for a long time you were there like mentor of the year or something in 2017 yeah yeah so please tell us about your you have you have one student that in particular is like a drum wizard oh yeah okay so so I've been with kids in a new group for five years now and I've had to say mentee for five years but I've also taught you know kind of like at different places the Texas Baptist Children's Home and different group homes and kids in a new groove is an awesome organization because I think music is one of the most powerful forces on earth I think there's a reason why it's in every major religion on earth it's because it's such a unifying thing it's such a healing thing and a lot of the kids in foster care go through things that no kid should ever ever have to go through and a healthy way to get those feelings out is music and you know it's one of my dreams so you know in music education is being cut you know through a lot of different schools and like it's you know like it's one of the first things to be cut in elementary schools I know personally I know this personally and I feel like one day I was just like you know I'm I'm gonna do something I want to do something about this I can't do something about like you know the macro level of things but I can let affect you know individual kids lives and uh and so I started I started volunteering with King I've had my mentee since he was five he's ten now and to watch a kid grow from five to ten and like see how music has given him confidence and just a way to express himself and you know there's performances they're involved with King and we got to open for shakey grace that's so cool yeah like you got to open for shakey graves at eight years old what did you do this summer yeah what did you do yeah exactly you know and he's ten right now then so he's already done all this cool stuff he got to perform outside the Moody Theater you know and like that it's it's such a cool organization and one of my dreams is to get to a point because music can give you so much you know music can ultimately give you the world if you get to a certain point and at some point you got to like give back you know and I feel it would be amazing to take this program not just to Austin but to like Nashville and Los Angeles and Atlanta and Chicago and all these in music cities yeah with all these mutes like a place where there's a lot of musicians in an infrastructure that supports musician exactly that they can give their time back exactly and kids in a new groove I think is like a great start in that particular direction and I would highly recommend anybody out there going to check it out if you're looking for a cool organization to donate to or to volunteer with or to become a mentor kids in the New Groove is definitely one of the I think top you know organizations here in town highly highly recommend them and they're they're awesome and and the mentee I've had for five years is like changed my life like I I went to his adoption ceremony and yeah I know and then he came his family came to my wedding you know so it's like it's it's become more like even if he doesn't want to do drums for it you know for a career yeah because who would want to do that you know just the ability to go in front of people and talk and just be in front of people that's a huge advantage and he's done that I think 20 or 30 times already and he's like he's 10 so you know I think that yeah yeah yeah I'm I highly recommend checking them out and looking them up if you haven't already so yeah please know King they've been longtime supporters and we would love them a lot on that beautiful delicious note PS before we go into this next couple of songs there's a kpop Facebook group for Austin kpop fans yes our social media team found that out so we're gonna like you know it's a beautiful sentiment PSU kpop Facebook group there please give your round of applause to Micah dalgo as he plays a couple more so yeah thank you so this next song is called reckoning something happened that was me I stepped on my own cord that's how professional I am that's how professional I am and actually I think I'm gonna change my song I'm gonna do a song called The Wire so this song is called The Wire and I wrote this on a rainy day when I was second-guessing my choices in becoming a musician I don't know if you guys have ever second-guessed your choices but I really was that day and I just wanted to write a song that goes out to anybody out there who ever feels like sometimes they're walking a tightrope with no net don't you know I'm walking on the wire yeah with this tightrope smile hmm chasing all these broken dream now for miles and mile I could've been I should have been a better man don't you know I'm walking on the wire yeah I've been all across this land with nothing but your memory that girl inside of my head yeah and I could have been I should have been a better mate ah don't you know I'm walking on the wire yeah with this tightrope smile chasing all these broken dreams memory from my yogamaya could be I should have been better man thank you very much for this next song I'd like to invite somebody named Cody yeah yeah from a band called the Texas KGB which is an amazing amazing band with Cody Kelly Jason violet and you should definitely look them up they're awesome when y'all playing next actually private party Horseshoe Bay you can't come but it's gonna be awesome I know that but you also play every third Monday at one-to-one but okay yes yes today is Tuesday right okay all right all right so this is a song called fool for you and this song is about loving something for someone that you know you should but we do anyway yeah baby why do we gotta live cut Popeyes is poison love ya it's killing me inside and I don't know yeah do you see just what you do to me it's all my heart to shreds and I don't know and I don't know for you just you I'm artful for you I don't know what to do what to do I'm a fool for you just you and my baby girl I don't know what to do yes all right that's the guitar I throw the Germany starting light at both amazing give it up for Cody bless you ever play the drums in his life however that first time yeah check out his episode it's episode well like 50-something it's in the 50s it's in the 50s it's on YouTube and pawed chaser so check that out important announcement before we begin with this game we have a t-shirt winner so we'll get you a shirt after the show yeah girl you guys i came to me and all I got was this really softy sexy t-shirt absolutely we're gonna close out this episode with a little game that we've just come up with and it's called ATX playlist yes so we're gonna get we're gonna ask you we're gonna give you like scenarios and like what band would you blink to so what what band would you listen to why you do this thing or why you're in the situation cuz you know a lot you know a lot so we're gonna test you say you for all of it I would listen to myself sing for everyone all the time can you kick it up okay so what awesome man would you get a tattoo to super funny clothes yeah have you been tattooed listening to super funny no but that's the first thing that came to mind that's a good I feel like the amount of what they've got going on sound wise would be enough to actually like fully distract you from from yeah yeah I'd like half the time like I have no idea what you're saying and I'm in it okay whoo what austin-based musician would you work out to trouble in the streets because their music is like high energy and like yeah I feel that that's good I feel I would I would work out to Katy rain – yeah can I just sit on the couch and work out I'm working out who gives a damn yeah yelling at me mom I'm working out – there's a sale at the mall okay what I'm Austin bass man would you pick up dog poo – hmm is that spiteful no I think that I would listen to like McEntire because it'd make me feel like yeah energized and I'd be like picking up this pune be like that's why I feel like so punk rock picking up my dog yeah also we I made fun of him so much for not having any tattoos so I feel like if he like brought me some song about not having tattoos and having to pick up dog poo I would be in Oh sound of the semaa okay who would you listen to – for a breakup playlist Ringo when I win I think black Pumas cuz Erik Burton has a sexy sexy voice and I think you know that could help you you know out whatever feelings of breakup niss that you got and yeah oh I thought you were doing like what song would I put on to break up with somebody some music and be like alright well you know what this mean is technically the same cuz there's anyone you're no house of Kenzo nobody there's no gays in the house I have no gays in the house only in college how sick Enzo is like their their beatmakers and she's she raps and what the other girl sings over and there's always stripping and there's tons of gay people and it's the best day ever and it is both putting on when you're breaking it with a person and just to get you through it just some good old-fashioned gay toplessness to get through that that's literally how sick Enzo if you're not well-versed go look it up look I saw her do the splits at the Mohawk she literally crawled up the side of the wall did the splits on like that dividing wall were people like the balcony and then she like jumped on to an amp and then jumped into the slits on the ground like honker was crazy she's like princess she's intense race she's intense wow you don't know about her I don't know she's rock and roll to the core but gay is all get-out okay okay well that brings me to what awesome base man would you have sexy time to Texas KGB I guess my follow-up after that was which one would you have personal time to take this kind of the same thing just without anybody else it's encompassing think my mind's Aubrey Hayes you Jake Lloyd time like with somebody else Audrina is actually playing this Friday at the cactus opening for Daisy O'Connor I wasn't gonna tell them okay it's awesome ace Anna would you have a movie montage – I like that one movie montage just a bunch of clothes staring in the mirror I think tomorrow in the FCS you know I think they've got a really good sound and I think they're things you know montages are like upbeat and they're like you know you move in so that's why would you like Jackie Benson oh yes yeah she would kick yeah she would kick a movie montage disaster cool I don't know
