NIU Art Deco Exhibition Suite

NIU Art Deco Exhibition Suite

(music) Jo Burke (Director, NIU Art Museum): The Art
Deco Exhibition Suite is a grouping of four exhibitions. We are going to be working with
students in the Museum Studies Program. It is an interdisciplinary program, so we need a topic that can be covered in an interdisciplinary way. Peter Van Ael (Coordinator, Museum Studies
Program): Students are given a theme and then they develop the different storylines. Carmin Berchiolly (Graduate Students, Art
History): The name of this show is “Beyond Gatsby: Common Luxury in American Art Deco.” The focus of this show, as the title says, is really to showcase everyday objects that
were from the 1920’s through the 1940’s period. Markie Striegel (Graduate Student, Art History):
My favorite piece is a smoking stand. It is located in the lounge area. It is gold and
has a hanging ashtray. It is really art deco. The “Between the Wars” exhibit features women’s
fashion from the collection of Barbara Cole Peters. It features vintage posters, advertising
posters from Europe. Barbara Cole Peters (Curator and Exhibitor,
Former NIU First Lady): I had been collecting 20th century women’s clothes since I was in
college. I am exhibiting 14 pieces, and they run from the 20’s and the 30’s and I just
have a few in the 40’s. You may come in here and find out that in
your home you have a legacy of art deco objects that you may have never seen or thought of. The objects that are in these displays and
the dresses, the movies we are showing, the bus trips, there is something that everyone will enjoy.
