I was fortunate enough for Sony to bring me to Cuba last year. It’s one of those magical places in the world.
We visited a family who owned a farm of tobacco and I started speaking to this gentleman about
how he was raised to farm tobacco. As I was talking to him, he just took one of his cigars and put it in his mouth and like I just said ‘I’m just gonna take a portrait.
Can you stay just like that?’ I shot this picture with the a7R II. Having Sony cameras being that they’re small and compact, it doesn’t intimidate people. You can see this photo and you can kind of imagine a lot of different things about the life of this person. And when I saw it I said ‘This is it. This is my picture. That is why I came here to Cuba for.’
