John Pederson Jazz Quintet. I put the group together
about 5 years ago as I have a great love for jazz
and improvisation which is so different from any other kind
of music that you have to play. Jazz offers you the chance
to improvise and make up the melodies as you
go along based on chord changes. So I put together
some of the finest musicians I could find in the FM area. [muted trumpet solo] One of the missions of myself is to preserve jazz
in the Fargo-Moorhead area and keep it alive
and keep it vital. it's one of America's only
original forms of music that is played worldwide. And it's something that has been
a passion of mine, and it's something that I want to let students hear
what the older folks have transcended down
through all of the generations and played
different styles of jazz so that everyone can hear
how varied that jazz can be. It's something that has
been a real passion and one of the things
that keeps me alive and keeps me going
in my retirement after 32 years
of band directing. [muted trumpet plays solo] Hi, my name is Bruce Geske, I'm the trombone player
in the combo today. The next song
we're going to play is
"On Green Dolphin Street." It was originally played
by Tommy Dorsey for the movie
"Green Dolphin street." But I really fell in love
with this song when I heard Miles Davis and John Coltrane
playing it in the '60s. But today we're going to play
a version that's a samba. [playing a rhythmic
samba beat] [piano plays the intro] [horns play the melody] [instruments only;
no vocals] [trombone solo] [trumpet solo] [bass solo] [piano solo] [horns play the melody] Hi, I'm Nate Amundson, and I
play piano in the Jazz Quintet. Next up is "Here's that Rainy
Day" by Jimmy Van Heusen, and we're going to perform it
as a bossa; hope you enjoy. [playing in bossa nova rhythm] [trumpet takes the melody] [trombone takes the melody] [trombone & trumpet play
in duet] [trumpet improvisation solo] [instruments only;
no vocals] [trumpet solo continues] [trombone improvisation solo] [trombone solo continues] [piano solo] [trumpet solo] [trombone solo] [trombone & trumpet play
in duet] Hi, I'm Christopher Hanson, I'm the bass player
in the Jazz Quintet The next tune we're going to do
is a classic, standard tune. It was originally written to be
performed in a French movie. It was originally called
"The Dead Leaves." When it was rewritten in English
and brought over to America, it was retitled "Autumn Leaves." [muted trumpet plays
the melody] [playing
in cool jazz/swing rhythm] [trombone solo] [trombone/trumpet duet] [trumpet improvisation] [trombone improvisation] [piano improvisation solo] [trumpet plays the melody] [trombone plays the melody] [trumpet & trombone duet
on the melody] [trumpet improvisation
on the outro] The music that the John Pederson
Jazz Quintet played today was a vast variety
of jazz. of styles We played bossa novas,
we played sambas, we played swing tunes,
we played funk tunes, and that is all
such a great way to show that jazz can be played in
so many different styles and genres so that it's
never, never boring. It's always something that keeps
our interest going, and we can take any tune and put
it to any different style, and the whole complexity
of the tune changes. And that's what we enjoy
so much to do for you. Hi, I'm Russ Brown, I'm
originally from Larimore
North Dakota, but I now reside in Fargo.
Up next is a funk number by the Jazz Crusaders called
"Tough Talk." Hope you dig it. [bass plays a funk intro] [bass & drums play] [electric piano joins
the bass & drums] [trombone & trumpet play melody] [trombone improvisation solo] [trumpet improv solo] [electric piano solo] [bass solo] [drum solo] [full quintet
plays in funky jazz rhythm] [trumpet hits & sustains
an extremely high note] (woman) "Prairie Musicians"
