Realising a career dream of being a composer

the question of whether I would do music is now in it's the only thing I can do well I just didn't understand how to join the dots how to make a career I found myself in the backend of bands playing for soloists and instrumentalists and singers and and being quite mystified by what they were doing so I knew I had to fill this big gap in order to supply my dreams with enough fuel so that's when I went to you test everyone is doing music is there me as a contemporary musician who moving into composition I had a building full of string players there was like raining violins was amazing when I was doing my masters I had to do something different so I did a piece with a string quartet which was the most groundbreaking experience of my adult life possibly suddenly there was grooving there was melody and harmony and textures that were just so exciting and I could go places that a band couldn't they could just reach all these different areas but slowly slowly slowly just by styling with the quartet and then building out it's not only got me closer to my dream of working and reality working with in film and theatre so forth but it's also taught me that to compose music isn't always about being on the ground in the front now I'm writing pieces that don't involve me so understanding the size of human events biet you know a big film or a big theatrical event or a processional a moment in time that is elevated by music without me being in the spotlight and that's both amazing and humbling there's no way I could have understood that years ago as a senior a rock band or playing drums because that is a different way of understanding music and people understanding this just giant bubbling thing of humanity you
