SIT NEAR HIGH PERFORMERS

SIT NEAR HIGH PERFORMERS

Hey friends! Dave Burkus here, welcome back to the DailyBurk. And today we are talking
about why you should sit near high performers. I know it sounds a little… weird, but some fascinating research from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University shows that in one study of a
large technology company regrettably with an
open office floor plan, more on that in prior episodes, found that high performers
had a spillover effect. When you had the highest performer in a division or department, there was about a 25 foot radius around which people that
were near him or her had about a 15% increase
in their own productivity. And by the way, negatives had the same spillover effect but obviously with a… 'round a 10, 15% decrease. Who you're sitting near, even if they, you don't work with them. Even if you're not near
them because you have to collaborate with 'em. People you interact with, their habits, their hobbies, their behaviors, rub off on you more than you know. And so if you wanna be
seen as a high performer being near a high performer is good not only politically
just because of proximity but it turns out it has
an effect on your psyche as well and can increase
your own productivity. Yet another study showing
that who you are around, who you know, who's a friend, and who's a friend of a friend, matters more than we know. So be deliberate, not only about who you're interacting with but who you're even
sitting near at the office. Now if you work from home, if you work from a remote office, et cetera, I think these results can still be applied the question is who you're
interacting with most. Are you choosing to work
alone 100% of the time? Maybe you should pair
up with some of the more productive remote workers that
you know in your community and have shared office days
where you all come together in a coworking space or a coffee shop or even just somebody's house, and work collaboratively together so that same positive spillover
effect can benefit everyone. Who you know matters and who you are around shapes who you become. So sit near those high performers and if you are one, invite other high performers
to sit near you as well. Thanks so much for watching
this episode of the DailyBurk. Leave a comment below, let me know where you sit. I mean really, on this whole bus of high, low performers, where are you sitting,
where do you wanna sit? While you're leaving that comment make sure you're following or subscribed because we are posting new episodes every single weekday,
