Spring Ridge elementary school students spreading kindness through art

ROCKS, THESE ARE SPECIAL. KETV NEWSWATCH 7’S NIYAH
GONZALEZ TELLS US WHY. NIYAH: THIS YEAR, AT SPRING
RIDGE ELEMENTARY, ART CLASS IS
GETTING A LITTE MORE CREATIVE. SECOND GRADERS, BLOWING DRYING
— BLOW DRYING ROCKS THEY
DESIGNED.>>SO TODAY, WHEN YOU PAINT, WE
ARE NOT GOING TO DO DIP, FLIP,
DIP. NIYAH: AN IDEA ART TEACHER KIM
BROWN STARTED TO SPREAD MORE
KINDNESS. “BE KIND” WAS A SCHOOL THEME
LAST YEAR, AND WE JUST TOOK IT A
STEP FURTHER SO THAT INSTEAD OF
JUST BEING KIND WITHIN OUR
SCHOOL SYSTEM, WE SPREAD THAT TO
JOY AND KINDNESS — THAT JOY AND KINDNESS TO STRANGERS. NIYAH: BROWN SAYS THE IDEA IS TO
PAINT POSTIVE MESSAGES AND
PICTURES ON THE ROCKS.>>WE TRIED TO GET STUDENTS TO
FOCUS ON ITEMS OR OBJECTS THAT
— IF THEY FOUND A ROCK, WHAT
WOULD MAKE THEM HAPPY?>>I’M DESIGNING A RAINBOW ROCK
WITH HASHTAG BE KIND AND A
HEART.>>I WAS TRYING TO DESIGN A
BASEBALL. NIYAH: AND ONCE THE ROCKS ARE
ALL DRY, THE STUDENTS HIDE THEM.>>PEOPLE WHO FIND THEM CAN TAKE
A PICTURE OF THEMSELVES WITH THE
ROCK AND POST IT UP ON OUR
FACEBOOK PAGE AND SPREAD JOY TO
PEOPLE WHO JUST NEED A LITTLE
BIT MORE HAPPINESS IN THEIR LIVES. NIYA AND DOZENS HAVE ALREADY
BEEN FOUND. BROWN SAYS NEARLY 300 HAVE BEEN
PAINTED, AND THERE ARE 200 MORE
TO GO, WHICH MEANS THATS A LOT
— THAT’S A LOT OF HAPPINESS
GOING AROUND.>>IT SHOWS THAT YOU CARE ABOUT
OTHER PEOPLE. NIYAH: IN ELKHORN, NIYAH
GONZALEZ, KETV NEWSWATCH 7. DAVI A RANDOM ROCK OF
KINDNESS. IF YOU DO FIND ONE, DON’T FORGET
TO TAKE A PICTURE AND USE THE
HASHTAG #SROCKS. AS PART OF OUR PROJECT COMMUNITY
INITIATIVE, WE WANT TO KNOW
ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND GROUPS
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR
NEIGHBORHOOD. IF YOU KNOW A CHAMPION OF CHANGE
WHO DESERVES TO BE RECOGNIZED,
