Tedcast Season 2: Episode 2 ft. Durand Bernarr: Learn your material MUSICIANS

I don't cry I just lay there I have to play to myself since Charlotte didn't rehearse and I wonder what it would sound like if y'all actually did learn the music and maybe I wouldn't be here on stage anything like that so I think the lowest pledge you can make is like $2 so go ahead check out my patreon and you get like special perks and things like that on and they'll explain everything there so uh let's get the topic at hand so back in May an artist named Aram Bernard whose it was an amazing vocalist he he's a singer a background vocalist for the legendary Erykah Badu there was a moment where he pretty much talked about you know musicians that don't like to rehearse and how much of a pain it was and the reason why I'm talking about it is because this situation happened in DC DC is mimei burring City you know like I go between Baltimore and DC a lot and for the fact that it happened in DC you know that's really embarrassing but it's not just DC it seems to be rampid among a lot of musicians to get hired by an artist or band and may not be prepared to know the material and then have the nerve to not show up to rehearsals and thinking that you know oh you know I'm just gonna learn the music on the way there you know I understand that there's this mentality of you know I got a strong ear and I can pick up on things quick but you have to understand that it's not about you you're you're backing someone and you're backing them to make them sound good now the situation that the Duran went through was he sent four songs to the musicians that he hired and and he sent them like three weeks ahead of time which I'm from it's very very rare and he explains well I'll just I'll just show you the video here alright there it goes I sent for a song for song to the bank first huh three weeks in advance cause I'm thinking it's just for a song y'all should be able to take care of that right and pretty much as I'm making my way here to the side of the country I get hit up like yeah the band needs the links again they need the links again as in when I sent them when we sent them the first time they did not download the music hmm gotcha gotcha okay but it's still only four songs right I mean what could go wrong because it's only motherfucking folk songs right my ain't that complex okay I'm not giving Anderson Peck right now okay my man's be having like three fo bridges a breakdown a B section a vamp bitch an intro and an outro first and foremost the rehearsal that was supposed to been had the night before only one musician shoulder everybody else couldn't make it could not make it ah okay so the the young man who who was on the uh not somebody everybody the the the the pianist with the beard deficiency much like myself was the only one who showed up for for the rehearsal so I really couldn't be too upset with him he actually showed up but then I get to the show and I personally I will personally take responsibility for not sending them the order of the songs I just I don't even know where my mind was definitely did not send in the order of the songs okay we start out Sam's vibe okay we don't start out smooth all right but y'all not playing it correctly now why you playing so goddamn fast Sarah the drums the drums Wow where are you going and why are you playing so fast we got right here sir come on did you smoke today did you did you sniff today bitch what did you have right right I got you then we go into unblocked right I'm thinking okay let's get that why is it that the bass player is pulling on his phone to listen to some shit before we start the number so we start the song I'm singing the chorus I'm like okay y'all give me the verse the pianist directly behind me is playing a completely different key than everybody else so that's when I said hey hey stop the music I said clearly they don't know this song sir can I get on these keys Thanks and can you set it in piano you clearly don't know what you're doing and and what's interesting is before I left to go to the venue I was telling somebody I feel like I'm gonna have to go up in here and act a complete ass to overcompensate because the band is not gonna know the music but hey when you stay ready you ain't got to as you can see like Durant even admitted that he didn't send the song order but you know if the musicians really studied the music they would have been okay with it you know it would have been fine like because it seemed like it seems that Duran seems to be the type of artist that appreciates their musicians and and since he's been a background vocalist he knows the struggles that bad musicians go through when they're dealing with artists and and things like that sometimes the artists aren't always the most organized or sometimes the artists think thinks it's below them to go the extra mile to make sure that their musicians are straight as far as like song orders or or or making sure it's the correct version and the correct key just like I said Duran knows the struggle thing a freelance musician as he's a freelance musician himself but the issue I have with a lot of musicians these days and I used to be really guilty of this as I don't know how much the gig was paying I don't know what their side of the situation was but like for me I have an issue oh I don't have anymore like still kind of do I kind of like I kind of get standoffish when an artist demands way too much for way too too little money and and it's not even the fact that I can play the music or not it's the fact that the demand doesn't need the pay scale that's me that's just me so you know I don't know what how much musicians are getting paid but something tells me that you know they just didn't want to show to rehearsal and didn't and didn't sit down and study news it because I guess the pay wasn't and like pushing them to study the material but if they look back and look at the bigger picture you have someone from LA coming to Washington DC someone from LA that's worked with Erykah Badu with other legendary artists and you're gonna half-ass and and like make the gig go down in flames because you didn't learn the material like like the way I look at it is okay you're a musician there's always gonna be someone better than you and and the way I see it so when someone better and younger than you like someone that's younger and better than you you know so like you have to treat every gig like a opportunity to go to the next level and these guys clearly they weren't about it and like the fact that Duran had to kick the keyboard player off and play the music himself like out of it so embarrassed that would have been so embarrassed that that I didn't have the music down pat and I didn't have the music the way that that the artist wanted it you know I'm saying that's just me because on the artist side you have to take time to consider that baby they put so much time into each of their pieces like and they trust you they trust you to replicate those results that they created you know saying like that's the street disrespectful light for you to just show up like he talks about how the bass player came to the gig and he would call out the song and the basically would have his phone to his ear trying to pick up the new that like the only time that's kind of acceptable as if you've gotten the music like hours before the game or or hmm cuz I'm really trying to defend these guys and I can't or like if the artist is like I I'm sorry I sent the wrong music out it's supposed to be in this key and I want it in this arrangement and then you know like for me like I for me when I get music not only do I listen to it but I try to chart it chart out the song floor so having that visual we're having that visual roadmap helps my my other senses helps my ears so like for them to be at the gig when they got the music three three weeks ahead of time and still don't know it know the material I'm surprised they got paid just I'm just putting it out there like I don't know who these cats were and judging by the keyboard that homie was playing on he doesn't seem serious about his craft that's all I'm saying yeah you know I'm now like I said early I was guilty of this a couple times actually I was guilty of this one instance in particular stands out stands out to me and I was playing this gig with an artist named Brian Christopher if I said his name wrong I'm sorry Brian Christopher was not only one of the coolest cats I worked with but I basically procrastinated and he said a lot of music I'll say that he sent a lot of music but he still sent it in a good amount of time where I could have just had all the material down and not only not only was I had not prepared the sound guy wasn't prepared either because we were running tracks and the sound guy didn't know and then there was no rehearsal that I thought I remember of I could be wrong and like the other person I was really prepared was the bass player but me and the keyboard is we weren't prepared and I burned a huge bridge I mean Brian eyes like we haven't talked in years but like we were we're still cool but I know after that gig and I could tell after that game she was not calling me ever again because of me just not being prepared and ready to go and y'all job like a lot of musicians these Asians don't understand like okay alright so what so the gig is not paying what's your worth okay the gig is not paying what you're worth but you're still getting paid something and I could be put towards a bill or could be put towards a small micro piece of your student loan or or something but like if the artist is not demanding a through Z and they're really cool when they're done earth and they're willing to work with you like make it happen yo like it's like put your ego aside if the artist is not giving you any kind of ego put your ego aside and just work with them you know I understand if the artist was like oh I'm such a such a nearly getting paid $125 to play for me I'm always sending you for songs he's better half of them down or I'm gonna tell everybody I know you will suffer from my clouds like no like okay if the artist has that kind of ego alright still be cool but operate in silence and make them make your homeys though I get stay away from such-and-such stay away from this artist stay away from but like don't come into the game like oh like I heard your tracks like once y'all your stuffs easy like treat the gig like like you were their original musician on this like come on young like for real like it shouldn't it shouldn't be like that in fact a lot of things will clear up if you knew how to communicate when it came to negotiating your gigs like all right so you got asked by Duran Bernard to play this gig so what you want to do is okay well I appreciate you thinking about me and thinking I will fit for this gig so how much is this gig pan when and when and where is the gig is there gonna be a rehearsal if the rehearsal is the rehearsal paid or not if it's the rehearsal paid or not will there be equipment at the rehearsal location you know and like how many songs are you sending me do you have Dropbox do you have Google Drive do you have like ask questions you know and try to get everything in writing like like I think I think none of this would have happened if the musicians knew how to properly communicate and and would have been like all right so like how much is the gig how much is this what's going on this and that and won't they won't you know but um it's like stuff that shouldn't be that deep becomes deep because because egos that makes sense I don't like at this point I'm just rambling you know but I I'm starting over it's just it's just a bunch of girl stuff and musicians I need to stop artists y'all need to chill too you know as long as we all know that we're people and and they don't get caught up in the cloud of one's ability for one social status then things should be better but that's just me all right well that's it for this episode of tag cast thank you guys for checking out this episode and tell me your thoughts in the comments and also you know subscribe hit the bell and also check out my patreon like I said before well yeah that's pretty much it and think thank you guys for checking out the video well you
