Tenth Hesket Newmarket Music Gathering Brings Musicians From Far And Wide

dozens of musicians made the trip to Heskett new market for the annual weekend of music sessions and celebrations our tenth anniversary it's a music gathering we call it and we're loads of musicians from all over the country turn up and play we have set ups in the back and we just basically like to encourage people to do some session some sessions around the fall basically the whole idea came from it being a and musicians weekend and so we can for them to remember basically as well as booktalks playing timetabled sets any other artists are encouraged to set up and play wherever they found room people from we have a group come from Newcastle they've been coming for 10 years and we've got bands from New York as people come from all over the country basically all the musicians are come down here play for free and what we do to encourage them is to see it would be obviously we raise money for there is money for charity we give them whatever we can they kick they come down support us and I do think that they're there meet all the musicians and it's kind of this musicians thing I'd like to think that the music Gathering is a ten year old tradition as attended by many regulars each year it's an absolutely superb weekend it's a the best music festival we've ever had if it all worked out perfectly it's gotta be orchestrated you've gotta make sure that everyone's in different rooms doing their thing and they just do enjoy the weekend as well so they kind of starting to turn up as every year goes by you know I bumped into one guy you thought was he last year and he said Noor was eight years ago will you remember the faces you know the organizers believe that the pub trade and traditional music are linked and as one prospers or fails the other follows I think it's our our passion for music as well and with it being a traditional pub it's all roots music it's all routes based there's a lot of great musicians in Cumbria and they do deserve you know a stage to do their thing and it comes back on them although they do come down here and they play for free we get asked a lot about bands and and and we can say this box great for that and it does work both ways too there is an issue in is it from a musician's point of view that you know these people do need to be beard they're working they're working so there's only so much charity work you can do and we try and share that love like we see the problem is that that as food struggle it's less likely that landlords are able to peer people to come down and play and the music belongs in pubs we asked a number of musicians why they had trouble to attend the festival just really good crackling it's really relaxed atmosphere and and we can just sit and play in the corner and play with other people that we don't see very often so it's really nice atmosphere and it's good to spot Simon and Helen I've only been twice I came last year I just like the ezd lovely bit of lovely people and I meet quite a few old friends you know the event offerors is funds for local charities in the area home this year we've done that a few years for auspice at all you know it can be via northern air ambulance but that's their incentive as well because it you know they're raising money for charity if we just do it through a raffle and we do it through donations for the music basically and people are getting the money's worth you know every time you see one band somewhere that might cost you money so why not just chuck some money in a book written do some good with the artists all packed up and headed home many promise to return with their instruments and voices on the eleventh gathering comes calling Gary McLaren that Stevie
