The Detailed Synopsis that WRITERS Need! (Testing Your Idea)

so when it comes to the synopsis most people think the back matter right here this is true it is the synopsis but what's more important is probably what's known as the author's synopsis or a detailed synopsis and that's what we're gonna talk about in this video if you're new to my channel thank you for visiting I'm John Lee champ I'm a writer and book reviewer and my channel consists of booktube and author tunes so we'll get into this video about why did the detailed synopsis is important for a writer so the detailed synopsis is a full telling okay you're not showing in the matter that you wouldn't a novel you know show don't tell in this format you would actually tell so you're you're breaking some rules but you're telling yourself the beginning the middle and the end you're also filling in their character profiles and this this is done in a matter that you know you're not going to show anyone you'll have your final synopsis that you'll send to an editor but that will be after you're done with your novel the initial synopsis the one that only the author is going to read is going to be your brainstorming and then it will be a product of a skeletal outline basically and then the synopsis shows you the author basically the middle I mean I mean the beginning the middle and the end and then you can you can always change it as you write your novel your you will change it because new ideals will come up as you're writing but what the great thing about the detailed synopsis the initial one is that you can see as a writer if your idea works that's the absolute best thing about the detailed synopsis so again to highlight the synopsis and what I'm speaking about it is not the back matter which is a synopsis in itself but it is to bring forth the reader into reading your book alright that is that synopsis the author synopsis is a synopsis for your eyes only the writer okay now there is another synopsis that you will write like I said previously when you're finished you're you book your book you will write that synopsis and only send it to an editor who requests that synopsis that five page or ten page synopsis some some want them to be less than X X amount of words so if your editor says I want a synopsis of your book that's 500 or less words that's what you have to present to them so you'll have to go through your five or ten payson OPS's which is good that you already have it and then you have to shrink that down to that specific amount of words but as you can see it right now is important that you have that synopsis so what are some benefits to the author synopsis well like I mentioned earlier your idea is placed on paper and now you can see your full story from beginning to end and see if that functions for you or if it's entertaining you can do this within two weeks all right and test out your idea why would you waste a year two years writing a story not knowing if your idea will work or if it will entertain an audience you can do this in two weeks by writing your initial synopsis this will be five to ten pages it can even be shorter it depends on how much you tell and not show again here you're breaking the rules of novel writing and you're not showing you're just telling yourself the story so in this next section we're going to go and talk about just one specific idea so let's go ahead and use the example of a major toy company who has a new CEO and this CEO wants to make a toy for a younger audience the male type focusing on the male type that has action figures that are animated so they can talk and move okay and the CEO specifically wants there to be a hero and a villain and so there's two to span it to a wider audience um the company builds several different characters for the heroes and several different characters for the villains forget about this batteries not included crap we're just stick in a lifetime global it's a clippie himself keep these things wanted forever don't piss off the guys that ever ready yeah hey how's this for a slogan the commando elite anything else is just a toy everything else is just a toy that's good too so you have your idea of building animated toys and you want to expand on that and make it into a full five ten page synopsis so how do you go about this well one thing is that you can start off with a logline or your elevator pitch this is really good a really good starting point that will be suggested by many many writer author tubers out there your logline is imperative but I will make a separate video on that right now what I want to talk about is character profiles and using that to build your synopsis okay so we'll build a quick character profile of a character that we'll call Matt and we'll build a profile right now and I'll hopefully you can understand how it is that you create a character profile so as the audience as the viewer you already know as the writer that nobody cares about animated toys nobody cares about a teddy bear that you pull the string and it says I love you etc etc nobody cares about that that's boring think about Chucky Chucky would be boring if it wasn't for that one Chucky that came alive and started murdering people right so how do you build upon that and make an interesting story with action figures so we have a CEO who wants animated figures that has enemies and heroes now let's throw in some conflict right let's say we we discover Matt right he's a side character and he wants to impress this said CEO so what what does he do he goes online and searches for top top-of-the-line chips that can be used in toys all right so this is what Matt is trying to do to impress the CEO let's find us some chips now the problem is that Matt he's not educated and in the source of tips okay he doesn't know what chips to to place into these animated toys so what he does is he just gets the top of a line right the state-of-the-art chip the X 1000 without knowing what it does or where it came from now the background information about the X 1000 is that it is a military prepared chip and this Matt does not know so now this is going to create some conflict because of of the how naive our character Matt is okay some really good chips a lot of really good chips the x1000 hello mr. chips so there are three things to building our our Matt's character profile okay so you want the mission you want the incentive and you want the obstacle I do have a full sketch of this YouTube video right here okay and these sketches that will apply to my patreon page so that you can actually go line by line and see how how I construct these videos and you can also see what I'm talking about if you want to see it in print so those are the three things you want it is the mission the incentive in the obstacle okay in other words it is the wants the because and the but and I'm going to use this and in a reference so you can understand it better so now we understand that we have Matt and we're trying to build his profile we understand that there's three things we need we need the mission the incentive and the obstacle so how do we write this I'm going to go straight off my sketch and tell you what I wrote okay so we can say that Matt wants okay the chips to make these toys the best that they can be alright but more so because he will impress Clint the CEO but his coworker is against this whole thing because it was his original idea and Matt is taking credit for it okay so we can see there how I used the wants the because and the but this is wrong this is really wrong I mean you know this is a total perversion of everything I designed these gorgonites to be wood you can at aaron come on this is a golden opportunity if we pull this off mores eating out of her hands and by the way gentlemen mr. Mars expects the product to be ready for shipment in three months three months so that would be the character profile for this character and he is a minor character you would know that when you write your synopsis now when you think about character profiles you're thinking about hair color eye color etc etc yes this is a character profile but that is for your novel writing that is the details that you will add you will add into your novel this character profile is different because you're just using it for your synopsis and it's a telling of who this character is what it is that what is their wants the incentive and the obstacles and that is all you need for the synopsis you don't need to know their hair color their eye color etc etc for the synopsis unless it plays a crucial part to two-armed let's to the plotline so let's say their eyes are red because they can shoot fire out of their or out of their eyes or something or whatever it is if it's crucial to the plotline yes you can add those details but do not go absolutely crazy and showing this stuff in your synopsis you want to show save the showing for your novel and just tell yourself as the writer what what what's the story what's what's the core conflict what's the core story that you're trying to present to your audience as you can see this is just one character profile out of many that you can have let's say your george RR martin and you're right in the games of thrones you're going to have like over sixty characters in that first book and you're going to have all those profiles and you're going to try to fit it in into ten pages or less obviously you want to fit in the most important characters and leave the other one out so you would start with your your pivotal characters your protagonist your whoever is going to help the protagonist you know um the mentor sidekicks anything like that you definitely want to add the antagonist what their powers are if they have powers what is what it is that they're doing to stop your protagonist um you want to add the conflict in there things that characters struggle with etc etc you want to make these profiles quickly and not focus too much on them in the synopsis part of this of this writing journey okay you don't want to focus too much on the character you want to build the profiles which are different than your what is known as your character profiles for your novel writing that's where you add the air color the hair color I'm sorry the hair color um how tall they are if they're handsome or ugly fat or fit where they're from what color what color they're the car is what car they drive will career they have yes that is a character profile but for this character profile there's only three things you need and that is the mission the incentive and the obstacle that is all you need okay and just to just to use other words for those three three on three nouns is that you want your want your because and the buts the obstacles okay that's it as a writer I urge you that when you start this initial synopsis which is only going to be testing your your idea I do urge you to just tell just tell the story in full from beginning to end this is going to take some time you're gonna have to brainstorm you're going to have to do some minor plotting you're gonna have to think about your conflicts your stakes etc you're going to have to think about the story and fool but this synopsis is going to change dramatically from your your initial your initial writing of the novel to its end stage of drafting and beta readers etc etc that synopsis is going to change a lot okay and then it's going to change even more in the way that you have to shorten it if an editor or a agent asks for that from you you're going to have to shorten it to two those specifics that they request so don't get too stuck about making this synopsis perfect is it is only for your eyes your eyes as the writer to test out the idea that you have implanted in your head okay this idea has been there for months maybe years and you're trying to get it out and test it so go ahead and test it with this five or ten page synopsis it's up to you how long you want it to be but just just make it short and place everything from beginning to end the only thing you have to remember is that this synopsis is the skeletal version of your novel it is your the selling point to yourself you're trying to as a writer sell the story to yourself is it a good idea and should I cut should I continue with this idea through writing this synopsis if it sounds amazing and you absolutely love this skeletal outline synopsis idea that you have created from beginning to end and you want to expand on that you should definitely start your novel and start writing as soon as you can and don't worry if you're sticking to the synopsis that is over you wanted to test the idea and it passed the test now you have to start you had to start outlining etc etc whatever your writer writing process is okay start that now I do understand that there's Panthers and plotters etc but just start whatever process it is that you that you can it consistent to your writing program right your process and begin that after you do the synopsis but I strongly urge you whether you're a panther or a plotter or plots or that's been introduced newly around the writing community I would definitely suggest that you test out your idea through this synopsis it is only for your eyes it is for your testing is not not there to bring you down it results in you not liking the synopsis that's just you know if you don't like the synopsis that means that the story is probably not good and you can just move on to the next the next thing you have in your in your lineup so that's the thing about stories you have to create the best ideas you have and start with those and if one idea is just not cutting it you gotta you gotta set into the wayside just let it go and keep the synopsis of course keep it in the file always keep your writing but um let that one go and move on to your next best idea really that's all I have thank you for watching if you enjoyed this video please go ahead
