Great video David. After many years of inactivity, I decided to equipe myself to produce quite a lot of mostly orchestral music I composed and arranged in the past. What is your opinion on VSL SE (for starters) Cubase 10, MacBook Pro 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7 16GB Ram? Is a Mac mini 3,0 GHz 6‑Core Intel Core i5 Prozessor der 8th Generation (Turbo Boost up to 4,1 GHz) with 64GB Ram recommendable as a slave? What size of hard disc would you recommend? Thank you very much for you very instructive work!

I know this is an old thread but I did this stuff back in the mid to late 90s with Finale and a Kurzweil 2500. Of course the advantage to finale is when you have a playable midi file (that sounds fairly good and is notated appropriately ) you also have a printable score you can hand out to a real orchestra, and have them read it down. So I guess my question is how do you get from this brilliant sequencing (your brilliant sight reading of all instruments on all staves including transposing instruments was noted) to a playable score?

    Awesome, thanks dude.

  • Andrew Schaap says:

great video! thanks for making it. curious, do you use VEP to do your mixing in the server instances or do you have separate channels routed back into your DAW for that when it comes time to mix? you said that you rarely have to login to view the slave computers so i'm thinking you have them routed ahead of time, but that's a LOT of routing to manage for all those tracks! Thanks again. impressive.

For a setup of a master computer and a slave do I need only one license and one elicenser dongle?

  • Shadowhenge says:

Wish I could afford to do this. It is a PITA to load every instrument, record it, remove it, over and over and over again. It really seems like there is a "you must be at least this wealthy to participate" ceiling in composing. DIYing it is an exercise in months of work to do what the rich can do in a few weeks.

  • Victor says:

You could do this with a couple of mac minis 👍🏽

Hello! It's not about multi computer but… Does anybody know the correct sequence to connect Furman and UPS? Power – Furman – UPS or Power – UPS – Furman??

Cause I know that if you connect an UPS to the Furman it may cause the fact that the batteries work more than requested… on the other side APC suggestes to connect their UPS directly to the power instead to another device (in this case a Furman).

    That being said I'm a bit confused…

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

I'm new to Composing, but I use Logic Pro X and It seems that your slave system works with PCs. What can I do to have something like you have and you are right about Mac. It's expensive. Thank you for this video. I just happen to see it. Thank you!

  • Faith Mountain Productions says:

Thanks very much for your recent help. I was wondering about your PC slave specs. The link to your PC setup in the video above is no longer valid, or I'm simply having trouble locating it. Specifically, the amount of RAM on your slaves, as well as the type of sound card. I assume sound cards matter as it appears, and I'm still wrapping my head around this, that the audio is being streamed from the slaves into your DAW and out through your interface. Also, I'm very curious as to how many instances of Kontakt you can run on one slave machine. Thanks as always, John.

  • Francesco Somma says:

Hi, saw this video a couple of years ago, but it does not make me crazy about running a computer network.

I am a user of Studio one 4 on PC.

Do you think that a configuration like this (below) can be equivalent?

I included 64 gigabytes (128 to much money) of RAM, 4 T ssd (2 + 2), pentium i9. Maybe overclocking the beast? My need is to add a good quantity of VST instruments and effects to the orchestral use (synths, cabinet emulations …)

Thank you so much for every suggestion

David, I'm running DP on a 2012 Mac Tower. All AU instruments. If I move my libraries to PC slaves, won't I need to install VST instruments? I can't imagine the VEP server installed on the PC allowing me to load AU's….THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  • BadTrip says:

RAID is not that important (RAID 0 e.g.) on SSD drives since they so fast it doesn't make much of a difference. You can set up a RAID 1 or 5 for increased security in case of a failed drive.

Do I understand well, that loaded libraries on Vienna Ensemble will cover(block) certain RAM capacity, wo I cant use it for another work like graphic work…? So dedicated machine would be appreciated?

What kind of latency you get with this setup? Sending/receiving midi and ethernet latency combined?

  • Aaron W says:

    Hi David,

Thank you for this fantastic info!
Sorry for the beginner question, but are your libraries in the Mac or Windows platform? I was planning on getting a similar setup (Mac with PC slave) and wanted to make sure my Mac libraries will work. Thank you and Happy New Year!

Very interesting video. I’m looking to accomplish something similar to this. But I’m constantly between two cities. What specs would you suggest for a multi laptop setup? Like what are the most important things I should be looking for? Thanks!

  • Nikolai Clavier says:

    Great video! Thank you!
What are your specs on the "master" computer? Is 8GB ram enough on my master computer to run a template with say.. 200 tracks with VE Pro?

  • Robert Barner says:

Thanks. Clear presentation. Planning to add a slave computer toward the end of next year.

  • Alandra Olivo says:

Since all videos are only how to do this and that,
but no one has done one about the set up.
please do a video, about the setup, of these programs and the hardware.
of how to make them play, on a pc with out keyboard etc
show us how to set the midi and sound card, for these programs, with or without DAW.
Not about how to use it, that is very easy.
But, how to hookup the hardware, midi interface and etc
and how to save as, so that we could take that data and add or take away instruments, to create our own color.

  • Courtez Presberry says:

You’ve once again sparked my attention, you said you have key switches assign individually, how?

  • Courtez Presberry says:

Also a dongle per slave, what dongle are you talking about?

  • Courtez Presberry says:

You need to be more specific, how many computers do you have hooked up.

  • Shadowhenge says:

Thanks for the video… how many instruments can you play at the same time this way? I imagine you cant play an entire 100pc orchestra at the same time across gigabit.

David, great video, very informative. What do you use or recommend to control midi info like cc11, cc7 etc…fader systems, breath controller to make instruments like strings sound more realistic? Thank you!
