If you want to be part of telling great stories,
as a performer, director, designer, stage manager, production
team member, dramaturg, playwright, or a combination of the above—in the UC Santa Cruz Theater
Arts Department you can find the role you want
to play. We offer an intensive Bachelor of Arts program
designed to create innovative thinkers and well-rounded
students with more than one skill set. Introductory courses in acting, dance, and
design and technology, alongside academic courses in critical theory
and history, help you explore and lay the foundation for more
in-depth study. In addition to coursework, one of the most
exciting and valuable aspects of our program is the abundant
opportunity for hands-on practice both backstage and on stage. You may jump into fully staged productions
as early as your first quarters on campus. And, any UCSC student may take our classes,
apply for technical and design positions or audition for our shows! The three very different performance venues
in the department allow students to develop the problem-solving
expertise needed to stage productions on a conventional proscenium stage, a thrust stage,
and a black box theater. In addition, the department oversees a fourth
theater which is run entirely by students. You can leave UC Santa Cruz having gained
real experience that can make you more professionally viable
for instance, while your ultimate goal may be to act you can also gain skills in other
areas such as stage management, or scenic design, which increases
the chances of landing an internship or job when you
graduate. And our graduates have proven their ability
to go on to higher degrees at top tier schools such as Yale, USC,
