writers block podcast

all right good afternoon y'all welcome back to the brainiac lunch I'm Sam your host yo what's up it's your boy Caleb and today's topic will be we will be talking about red block so this came to me in 1949 it was coined by dr. Edmund burglar and it came about in his book called writer and psychoanalysis and this he proposed the writers blog was a form of self-sabotage itself and it was person and trying to write it would just sabotage himself because because of it early life experiences that damage their further development in life however throughout time as time has gone by more people have added different reasons as to why these blocks happen and what do you all think about that first first perspective that I brought up writer's block you really mess you up especially when you're like writing for an essay like on an exam like back in high school or like star test you'd have to make it up and make an hour so here we have a power to actually think of your topic well for writer's block the key is definitely thinking outside of the box because the whole reason why you get in writer's block is because you you're trying to think of something so elaborate that that's trying to make it work for the system when sometimes you have to exit the system in order to make something truly work and and you'll have you'll have a lot of success if you if you can to think outside of the box okay yeah me too just from this phrase perspective that I brought up from dr. Edmund I feel like it's not necessarily self-sabotage because it's not like you're writing an essay you're like oh let me myself over real quick it's like I need to do this right but like it becomes hard at some point so I agree with you all yeah so another point that I read that I thought was pretty interesting in an article reading cause it was by written by Mike Rose in which he proposed the idea that it was that as we grew up when we were like in elementary middle school high school whatever we were being taught in a way that like we always had to be like we always had to have our thesis statement in the first adventure what we always wanted to have a five paragraph essay or like it had to be perfect grammatically or has to be perfect sense otherwise we wouldn't be able to have a good essay however very like this really isn't true what do you think you know you don't have to really emphasize like an outline to make a good essay because if you push which on the student side they have to have a certain format M&S I'm gonna think about the flow of writing they're gonna be thinking about if it's gonna be good enough for a grade I think that like since they're so forced to have like a format they just focusing on that and they're not focusing on like the topic they're talking about or what they're writing about so it's kind of hard cuz they just want you just think you know if I don't do this like I'm gonna get a bad grade or if I don't do this I'm not gonna do good at stuff so they basic you right whatever but they're more they're thinking more of like the format then exactly writers writers will get a get caught in in perfectionism it's it's something that that can that can usually haunt a writer and that's also a part of the fear that writers have they they don't want to express their true feelings or thoughts or emotions because they feel like it will get rejected in especially in today's society but but they have to they have to overcome that because that's what makes the writer unique in the sense that there's so many writing examples writing materials out so many different types of writers that we've we've already seen as an audience and as readers many different forms of writing so being yourself and showing an identity that nobody's ever seen before will actually make yourself become a successful writer and that you're not copying the nature's of other authors and even this morning we had our so Kayla but I had our Soviet class and the teacher went on a tangent like 20 minutes going like oh you can't have an essay it's not a good essay for like a professor or whatever if you don't have like five paragraphs or if like a whole essay is just like one what if a whole page is one paragraph that's wrong you have to divide it into several paragraphs as to have like cleared steeped in state at one point and overall your conclusion has to be a summary of everything you wrote which completely contradicts will be we've been learning and caught in English and I think that that goes along with like it also messes up like what we're trying to achieve like for my example at me and I can in psych all in the South you know what I'm doing it's like I write what I think like I just let it flow and I think it's pretty good paper like I've got good grades but like she tries to break it down by it has to be this ask to follow like this certain pattern if you're not following this pattern then you suck and you can't write essays cause professors I guess that's what she wants everyone else it's more the demand of what the teachers want and they don't really see the emotions of the of the writer and and how hard it is to sometimes get over writer's block when we've been writing basically since middle school and kind of waits to get over that can be you know clearing your mind getting inspiration from from what you find in in everyday life your daily routine maybe things that you don't realize can be inspiration are inspirational to you in certain types of writing you can go for a walk Museum have some sort of inspiratory effect on your on the basis of your writing so that you can create those tools to help you finish it nicely like I feel like she's just probably just doing the format because she's asked that's her job she has to do it and honestly I feel like other students probably have like a really really good essay and without her format and like it's really good but because it's not the firm that she wants it's like wrong but like honestly you don't have to like do everything they say to do because it could be really good yeah and then so the last you like really important points I got where if we I our friends or like our classmates we need to read them and I interviewed Cynthia I would have none and what they said that maybe it could come to be because you're not interested in the topic at all like a man like his own statement he said that he's interested let's say in science so whenever he has to write about science or engineering on Keith's clothes like he rides perfect paper but when it's about English or like history like it sucks like it's not what he wants to write about so that he procrastinates he like left his mind like flow in places that he shoot it like anyone writing so I feel like that's a really big reason that especially the King 5% experience I agree with like if I'm writing for English like what started talking that it doesn't interest me damn just like I'll do this later or like I don't want to think about this yeah exactly yeah especially it's like I won't put my full thought into this but I'll just secretary I mean that's when people people struggle with a lot they they struggle in finding the purpose in which in which they in which they even want to write the subject because as an English class or any other class that we have in high school or college it's it's papers that we have to write the professor tells us oh you have to write this you have to write it about this topic and we're not choosing your own topic so we we kind of get lost and disappointed in in the fact that we can't connect ourselves to the why more and more so than just that we have to so that's that's just something that kid so in conclusion I came to the conclusion or I read this order cut their article first that it said it was by a person named give me second I had it somewhere um Wendy Wendy Bishop she wrote this article and it was and she said writer's block wasn't something like you should fear it was something that like works completely against you but you can see it as a experience that you need to get across room an experience in which you can take more time to simplify the idea and then think about it and go deeper like go deeper into what you want to write across what you want to like tell audience when I'm like what the teacher wants you to do because in this case like writing Spock you can see the blog that's like the time I give you an if it seems like it's gonna on you I can see it as something that you can get more time it's like wait you're gonna write down and like it becomes helpful because it makes a better paper like in your own terms do you all agree with this and that's what you learn I was like your yeah not what I came like my conclusion was a not to fear whenever like I feel writer's block coming away it's like okay like it's a thing that I need to get past like yeah what can I do myself to get past this so in my like what I think would be really hopefully should like I'm probably thinking too hard about it I'm gonna try to make it yeah I'm trying to either make it perfect to elaborate so first of all just like simplify the idea like make it the simplest sentence you can make it and then just like let it flow off of it thank you probably just like doing a really good job yeah we're like I'm thinking too hard about the structure like for Sophia when instead I should just like let myself flow at the back exactly get absorbed in structual destroy one day was writing yes definitely you should treat you should treat this this term writer's block as sort of like a myth maybe as as something that's that's that that's higher above and that that people think everybody says oh you have writing a book oh you have writer's block when it could just be something of a deeper issue that's that's underlying and in the myth that is writer's block something maybe personal is something that may be affecting you from writing the essay that people don't that that people don't see other than yourself and that's something that you have to overcome and that's why it takes it takes you yourself and only you yourself to overcome writer's block yes especially what will advice would you all gears like incoming freshmen or like writers good our writers English student this too I think I would get like honestly just start that I has you always been doing it like always cuz every class you're gonna take in college they're all different some people have with different formats some people don't really care and some people like they had thank you have to use like certain stuff like just use how you usually do it and then just fix your essay how you usually do it into like how they want it and that's about a like just write how you use your usually right and then just fix the format as you go I kind of like I don't think that students should focus on format so like when like an Andy was saying how they write how they usually write well how they're usually write might be five paragraphs but I guess it can be like creative writing like I guess you can call it that so if you do that and then go back to your essay that's something they're I would recommend the just simple steps took it over this it's not hard like didn't see even if it seems hard just simplify let yourself flow be creative and then go back to fix I'd say that's the easiest way to overcome it so thank you for joining us again and yeah
